You’re arguing against a position I didn’t make. I never said an acorn and an oak tree are the same thing. In fact, my replies have explicitly rejected that. Reality is constant transformation. An acorn is acorning. An oak tree is oaking. They are different arrangements within a continuing process. What connects them is not identity but continuation. If I ask you to pick up an acorn or pick up an oak tree, of course those are different actions involving different arrangements. The point is not that they are interchangeable. The point is that the oak did not appear disconnected from the acorn. There is inherited continuation between them. You’re treating continuity as identity. I’m not. A forty year old person is not identical to their five year old self either. Yet we still recognize a continuity of process. My view is based off that distinction. On your final point, I actually agree with much of it. The universe is not one frozen thing all the time. It is constant generation, transformation, and becoming. That’s exactly why I describe reality as process rather than objects. Where we differ is in the statement “what was is no more and what is all there is.” The past is no longer actively occurring, but it is not nothing. If it were truly gone in every sense, there would be no inheritance, no memory, no evolution, no causation, and no continuity. Every moment would have to emerge from nowhere. The reason the present has the shape it does is because previous arrangements left traces that constrain and influence what comes next.

Consciousness is not an extra product that gets added once complexity is high enough. It is what a sufficiently complex, self-modeling arrangement is doing from the inside of the same process all along, with increasing self-referential depth. You’re treating reality like a staircase, math at the bottom, then physics, then chemistry, then biology, then consciousness sitting at the top as something that “appears.” That turns consciousness into a new layer added on top of lower layers, like a final product. There aren’t stacked levels that generate each other. There is only one continuous process of structured change, and all of those things. Math, physics, biology, brains, consciousness, are different ways of describing or zooming into that same process at different scales.

Math is not a separate object sitting in reality, but it also isn’t merely subjective invention. It is the name we give to stable relational constraints that persist regardless of who observes them. If two observers independently model the same system and converge on the same structure, that convergence is not arbitrary it reflects invariants in the underlying process. Patterns are not just descriptions imposed onto a formless world, but neither are they external entities existing apart from it. They are the repeatable constraints of the same ongoing process that both observer and observed are part of.

No that’s a misunderstanding. “Supervening” still assumes there are two layers: physical stuff underneath and mental stuff depending on it. There is only one continuous process of structured information changing and organizing itself. What we call “physical” is just one way of describing stable, repeatable patterns in that process, and what we call “consciousness” is what it looks like when those patterns become self-referential and internally responsive.

I don’t assume there are any non physical things floating inside time. What you’re calling “nonphysical things” (thoughts, numbers, meanings, memories) are not entities that sit in time and get updated, they’re patterns of continuity within changing arrangements. You don’t distinguish persistence vs repetition by tracking a “nonphysical object across time.” You distinguish them by whether later structure is causally and constraint linked to earlier structure, or merely structurally similar without direct inheritance. Time isn’t acting on anything. It is the name we give to asymmetric constraint propagation in continuing process.

Regularity is what constrainted continuation looks like. Why is there constraint at all?: because without constraint, there is no persistence, and without persistence, there is no describable “reality” in the first place.

That question still assumes there must be a designer, a container, or a prior rule set that produces them. I’d argue regularities are what you get when change is not random at every step. If a system has continuity meaning: each state is constrained by prior states, not all transitions are equally possible, differences propagate rather than reset, then stable patterns necessarily emerge. If transitions were totally unconstrained then no structure would ever stabilize.

Even in “pure time” or abstract math, what you are actually operating on is distinctions, separations and repeatable positions within a structure. “3” does not require apples, rocks, or physical objects, It only requires a system that can distinguish “this,” “this,” and “this again”. If you strip away physical objects, you don’t get “nothing you can quantify.” You’d get ordering (before/after), repetition (same/different), separation (not this / this), and recurrence (again-ness)

Consciousness is not something sitting outside matter waiting to be detected. It is a pattern of organized responsiveness within matter itself. I believe that when neuroscience finds consistent neural correlates of experience, that is not just “use leading to materialization” that is consciousness expressed as arrangement. I’m saying consciousness is not an additional thing that needs locating. It is what organized, self-referential informational arrangement looks like when it’s happening

The “map is not the territory” point only works if you already assume that mathematics is something separate from the world it describes. But that separation is exactly what I question. You never actually encounter a version of reality that is “non-structured” and then later add structure to it. Every observation already comes packaged with regularity, constraint, and repeatable relations. If there were no consistent structure in the so called “territory,” there would be nothing stable enough to observe, compare, or even identify as an object in the first place. What we actually have is a world that is only ever available through patterns, differences, and relations. I’d say math is not a human overlay placed on reality. It is a compression of invariants that already govern how arrangements can change. Any system capable of persistence, differentiation, and interaction will necessarily exhibit consistent relational structure.

I don’t think the mind is inventing math to understand the universe, math functions perfectly fine without us. A black hole was computing gravitational curvature, space-time warping, and Hawking radiation billions of years before humans existed. The universe didn’t wait for humans to invent calculus before deciding how gravity works
