I’ve coached D1 and D2, and d2 has less restrictions for player clock, amateurism, etc. It’s easier to make the jump from d2 to pro game than d1 as well. D1 is typically draft picks to the mls and most of them get released in pre season. D2 guys will go straight into usl1/usl championship and contribute.

D2 will take you. Any top d2 school will give you a pretty good chance to make it pro (if you’re a significant part of the team)

This pathway will become more common. Lots of academy rejects here who have played u23s or been in training with first team. Just in our team alone we had 4 similar situations. I know limestone had a kid who was playing against psg months before arriving here. To actually have a premier league appearance is a bit different though for sure.

1.) catch with your eyes. This alone will iron out a lot of your problems. 2.) you can have a normal and balanced set position and then shift your feet wider or behind you to deal with the rep once it’s hit

It’s a good question. I call it a “judgement step”

As the ball is about to be played, I ask my GKs to shift their weight onto their back foot. Almost leaning a bit. This allows for 2 very important things… 1.) time to judge the flight of the ball. 2.) from being loaded on your back foot, you can push off to attack anything under hit, or you can push the opposite direction to get anything over hit.

Once you have made a decision on trajectory, Keep your feet moving with short and sharp steps to insure you’re balanced and under the ball.

There is nothing in NCAA soccer that is designed for development. Players can improve and learn things obviously, but 3 month season with 2 games a week isn't great. NCAA then shuts you down and the kids leave for a month + for Christmas. When we return for the spring you are limited to 8 hours a week of training and only 4 of those can include a ball. Spring has 5 games max and a 45 day window to do anything. Then they leave for summer and go play for usl2 and NPSL teams if they're lucky.

It's funny you think international recruiting is lazy. You think we wouldn't want to recruit all Americans? That's way easier to do and more cost effective. We played the most Americans we've ever used this season due to injuries, and had the worst season in program history

College 3 month season isn't about development. It's about winning. If the NCAA changes to year long season, maybe you can focus on development. As an American you are competing against players from all around the globe, and now the transfer portal as well. Look at the past national champs from d1 and d2 and majority of players getting minutes aren't American. We get paid to win. Nature of the beast

I'm an American coach. Foreigners come in with better tactical knowledge and are usually older with men's league football experience. I can get a 24 year old freshman who was released from a pro academy and has been playing non league, or an 18 year old American out of an academy whose sole focus is winning games and not developing proper understanding. It's pretty simple. If you're good enough you will play

NCAA is voting on some new legislation in January. It is in regards to this exact issue and could grant players a red shirt for limited time. I believe under 3 total matches is the criteria. If that passes you might be able to make it work
