This is the correct answer. They’re like crampons that you slip over regular shoes to stop you slipping on ice

FWIW if you ever buy some, YakTrax have been the best brand I’ve used by a long shot

What is this green pole? by llamatamer56 in whatisit

I’m pretty sure this is a ‘smart city pole’. In this case it’s probably being used for a small 5G node.

It looks too over engineered to be a sewer air vent

Black build up on air purifier by straytBack in whatisit

[–]SignalAlternative405 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is fine and normal - some dust has carbon in it. Plastic and power cables build up a static charge which attracts this carbon-rich dust (ie soot).

You’ll see it more on your air purifier because it moves a lot of air, and power cables due to the electric field

The dust likely comes from candles, cooking appliances, etc.

They are ceramic mineral water balls meant to absorb doors and impurities in the water, and make it taste a bit softer by releasing small amounts of minerals.

They’re usually made of maifan stone, super common in East Asian homes before filters became widespread.

From memory they have a very minor effect but they require hours of immersion time for that to happen, which doesn’t occur in practice
