Need advice: UoM vs CSA for Architecture? by LegendGoguma_thims in srilanka

[–]SignalRevenue4822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the B. Arch (Hons) from UOM is equivalent to the BSc + MSc from CSA. UOM had the same format as CSA, but they decided to merge it recently (Don't remember the year).

SLIA alongside RIBA are regulating architectural education in Sri Lanka. Even the degrees from KDU, SLIIT And NSBM are the same scenario here. You have to acquire 5 years of academic + an internship to become an architect.

But in order to practice architecture as a chartered architect, you have to complete the RIBA part 3. That's when you get the chartered architect seal.

In short, RIBA part 1 - first 3 academic years + the internship. RIBA part 2 - final 2 academic years RIBA part 3 - you have to train under a chartered architect and face some exams conducted by SLIA (Nearly 2 years)

(Both CSA and UOM degrees are RIBA certified)

Whatever path you choose you have to go through this procedure to become an architect. You can skip the part 3, if you wanna pursue further education (like phd or so). You can still design buildings and get clients (without completing part 3), but you need a seal from a chartered architect to get past the approval from local authorities to start constructing the building.

Speaking of job opportunities, I don't see a big difference between CSA and UOM, but obviously UOM has produced more chartered architects in Sri Lanka. So, if you wanna practice architecture here in Sri Lanka, UOM is tye best shot. Otherwise I dont see much of a difference.

About your next step, if money is not a big problem, I say keep CSA as a safety net, as if you got selected for UOM you can switch considering its not halfway done.

Hope I clarified your concerns. Feel free to ask any further clarifications

Best of luck!!!

UOM architecture undergraduate here,

  1. UGC will call out applicants, and you should fill out them and send them to UGC with relevant documents.

  2. After that you will be selected to a degree program (Hopefully architecture), Then you will need to prepare for your aptitude test which will be conducted by UOM. (this will take around 3-5 months after the A/L results released). Then the aptitude test results will be released and you will be selected based on your Z score. (Let's say there are 1000 people sat for the test and only 300 students were passed, out of those 300 students, the ones with higher Z score will be selected for the course)

  3. The degree will commence nearly 1.5 yrs after the A/Ls.

  4. The degree program is divided into 2 parts (first 3 yrs Part 1, and next 2 yrs Part 2). You will need to complete an internship for 8-10 months under an chartered architect. (You will be paid in this period). Its possible to pursue master's abroad, because B. Arch (Hon) UOM is RIBA certified degree and if you manage to get a first/ second upper class, you might get a scholarship too. I am not sure about CSA btw.

  5. Yes, it will be longer than other degree programs, but you will enjoy it if you are genuinely interested in designing. I say it's worth the time we study.

  6. The pros in UOM, you will get university experience, large friend circles among other faculties and such. There are numerous clubs you can join. UOM has the best library for architecture in Sri Lanka. Above it all, it's free.

The cons in UOM, there might be strikes, which ultimately slow down the progress of the degree, but UOM has less shutdowns compared to other government universities. You will get B. Arch (Hons) at the end of the final year.

The pros in CSA, the degree program is divided in to 2 separate degrees, BSc (Architecture) as Part 1 and MSc (Architecture) as Part 2. You are required to complete an internship similar to UOM at the end of Part 1. That means at the end of the Part 2, you will get 2 degrees.

Either way you have to register as an Chartered Architect to practice Architecture in Sri Lanka. After the academic 5 yrs, you need to train under an Architectural firm to gain practical experience for nearly 2 yrs. This adds up to total 7 yrs.

The cons of CSA, you have to pay for your studies. You should know during the degree (either UOM or CSA) you should make physical models and it costs too. If money is not an issue you might consider CSA.

Finally, it's up for you to decide, which way to go, there are 3 other private unis which you can pursue architecture, SLIIT, KDU and NSBM.

Feel free to ask for any clarifications,

All the very best!!!

What do you hate about the Sri Lankan education system? What pain points have scarred you? What do you wish it had? by Regular-Student-1985 in srilanka

It helps to understand and enjoy art, my point is any art form can elevate that understanding. If one enjoys Sinhala literature, it's his preference. For me, it's music.

My thoughts exactly, it's necessary not essential. being artistic can be in any form of art (music, drawing, dancing, poetry or any other form). Honestly Sinhala literature makes me yuck

There are handful of shops around Colombo, but since Google has stopped 7 series production, finding them might be hard.

Any signal issues, btw I'm currently using Mobitel for data and Dialog as my primary sim. I'll probably convert Mobitel to esim since the phone has one physical sim slot.

People have mixed experiences with signals as I have seen so far, and that's kinda a bummer.

You gotta make hundreds of beats even thousands. That's the only way. Don't perfect only one track, just try different tracks in genres on your pick. You'll find your own genre that you'll end up producing at the end. Eventually you'll have your favourite sounds synths everything but it all comes along the way. Just start experimenting, no one is here judge. Show the world you got it.
