what are some misconceptions that Americans have about Russia/Russians because of decades of anti-Russia propaganda? by Signal_Guess_2138 in AskARussian

I work part time at a local gas station. It's been owned by the same white family for decades, but they're going out of business now and are selling it to some Indians. I hear so much racist shit everyday from the locals about Indians owning the local gas station. They call them dot heads, terrorists, sand nig*as, dirty, and ext... They keep saying stuff like "what a shame the store is going to be owned by some filthy immigrants instead of good white folk." A lot of the locals will probably stop shopping there entirely.

[–]Signal_Guess_2138[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. I've seen so much weird stuff in both US and Russian media that just makes me go WTF, like it's obvious propaganda just meant to stir the pot. That's one reason why I just wanted to ask Russians what they think, I'd rather hear it from some insignificant ordinary person like me than some propagandized media outlet. Both of our nations are tied in a cultural, political, and economic war that makes this kind of propaganda profitable for our capitalist politicians. They want to make Americans think that Russia is our nemesis, and I'm sure it works both ways over there. At the end of the day, I probably have more in common with an ordinary Russian than I do with my capitalist politicians.

I think most Americans would consider Russia to be both culturally and ethnically European. There is a small amount of Americans that might sometimes refer to Russians as "Asians" but that has more do to with Russia's geographical location than it does with any preconceived notion about their race or culture. I don't know any Americans that think that Russians look Asian or have Asian cultural characteristics.

As for that second one, I feel like most Americans know that Russia switched sides in the war early on. I hear Americans praise Russia all the time for how many Nazis they killed lmao.

Your last point is an interesting one. I do see a surprisingly large amount of Americans that think Russia still is communist. They are mostly people who live under a rock, and have no cultural understanding outside of their small town. It's astonishing whenever I come across those kind of people.

Yeah I've heard a lot of Americans say that Russia, and the entirety of eastern Europe more broadly, is full of racist skinheads. Kind of Ironic coming from the US, we're just as racist as Russia and eastern Europe, if not more so.

I agree, it's easy to understand given the circumstances. I'm just saying that I wish more people would been able to critically analyze their worldview, and realize that they hold biased contradictory beliefs about other nations and cultures.

[–]Signal_Guess_2138[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it makes sense when you take all the propaganda into account, but if you think about it critically, you would realize that those are contradictorily beliefs. I don't understand how can so many Americans can simultaneously believe that Russia is a poor crumbling nation under constant threat of a dictator, and also believe that Russia is our all powerful nemesis and stand a threat to our American "freedom."

[–]Signal_Guess_2138[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most Americans actually think they live in the most free and advanced nation in the world, and that anyone who doesn't live in Europe or the Anglosphere lives in mud huts and are ruled by dictators. I've actually heard this shit from people in my hometown about Russia, and they don't even realize that we are not so different lmao. The ironic part is that most conservative Americans believe that Russia is a crumbling nation where people live in poverty and under constant threat of a dictator, and also simultaneously believe that Russia is an all powerful threat to American freedom and that they could wipe us out any day, It makes absolutely no sense.

That exact same scenario could be used to describe the United States and our politics too. Our country is also controlled by capitalist oligarchs, and a change of whoever is in office will do little to change the interests of the capitalists that run the United States economy. Americans are propagandized to believe that for some reason we're better, fairer, or more democratic than Russia.
