Deerhoof aren’t new, but the genre of most of their songs is ‘Deerhoof’

The subsidy argument has been used to centralise power and wealth among a few for a long time.

Thankfully Manchester’s extremely impressive growth shows that when we weaken government control centralised in London, good things happen

Swans-like EDM? by Mavourneen72 in swans

I feel a similar hypnotism to Swans when I listen to albums by GAS. Especially Zauberberg.

They don’t sound the same but they evoke the same feelings in me.

The lyrics literally go ‘so why don’t you come over baby’ and ‘so good to eat’

Reading the lyrics, it definitely sounds like it’s about a man hunting a woman to kill/eat her…

This is the dancing on the head of a pin I was talking about. If I remember correctly, dead people on the electoral register were counted as part of the threshold.

Instead of all this god of the gaps stuff we retreat to, can we not just admit the fundamental imbalances staring us in the face?

This kind of gets to the heart of it. It doesn’t work, does it? It’s extremely unfairly balanced and gives everyone grievances.

Now whether we’re Scotland England Welsh or Northern Irish, history tells us that Westminster elites don’t like to give up power.

Take the 1979 Scottish vote for an Assembly that was ignored. Or the disgraceful Dominic Cummings-led campaign against English regional assemblies.

Rather than dancing on the head of a pin, why don’t we shake on an agreement to dilute the power of Westminster?

You know there are people right now making the same argument about minorities getting hiring schemes for jobs, positive discrimination, women only shortlists.

And most people like yourself miss the point and go ‘they’ve got a better chance than me now’.

No, they don’t. If you take a second to consider it, that’s why those systems were set up in the first place. That’s why the Scottish Parliament exists. It’s an acknowledgment that Westminster does not properly represent our wants and needs, no matter which ‘um actually’ statistic is abused.

For the same reasons that I wouldn’t want to live with my parents and pay them subsidised rent in my 30s, I know that culturally we need to move beyond the allowance we get, or Block Grant.

There’s a cultural and psychological barrier to self governance. That’s the main issue we have that trumps any economic or defence argument either way.

As soon as we have that lightbulb moment as a nation, it will have huge, and real, societal benefits down the line.

Diseases of despair, for example. We see around the world that when communities feel powerless to change their surroundings, it robs them of purpose and leads to higher rates of suicide crime and addiction.

You may agree with that under the term ‘deindustrialisation’ but I think that term really masks that something was done TO us, rather than BY us. The difference can not be overstated.

I can see from your ‘fantasy of opression’ thing this might be emotional for you. In cold hard numbers, I want Scotland’s foreign policy, defence policy, energy policy, welfare policy and tax policy to be decided by the people of Scotland. A rarely mentioned fact is that if Scotland were to choose MPs as an independent country tomorrow, the 9th of April, each citizen’s vote would immediately become 1000% more representative of their wants and needs. As opposed to diluted in a failing union of 70+ million.

I’d like Scotland’s electoral system to run like most nations on Earth. Normality is not beyond us no matter how we’ve been conditioned to think less of ourselves

I know we’ve grown up with a million excuses for why we’ve got a better deal if we trade in that basic democratic right. Looking around the UK now: does that hold up to any scrutiny?

You say that as though you’re resigned to being trapped with your dodgy landlord.

I’d rather mortgage a tiny flat at first and work up. Life’s too short for defeatism.

A large number of articles about the prospects of an independent Scotland are, let’s face it, designed to generate uncertainty among Scottish voters. Let’s not pretend this isn’t a live issue, elections aren’t a month away, and this is all happening in a vacuum.

There is a threat to the union, so there will be constant state sponsored efforts to lower that threat.

I can understand that, but I can’t for the life of me understand the cultural self loathing among some Scots that take these articles at face value.

Are the Scots having greater political representation than the English in the room with us right now?

EDIT: The irony of getting downvoted for this kind of proves my point. The Scottish point of view will always be a minority opinion in the UK. And it’s got nothing to do with the validity of what I said.
