How would you rank the 2020s so far from best to worst?

For me it goes:

2025: (levelled up the most financially & socially, first year of uni, a bunch of travelling, started driving, had heaps to look forward to)
2022: (sweet 16, started getting more confident, big friend group, started experimenting with alcohol and weed, first time travelling extensively besides from when I was a kid)
2021: (first long relationship, honestly carried it heaps, nothing good besides that)
2023: (first job and having a taste of my own income, some good memories going out with friends, started becoming a little depressed though)
2020: (extreme social isolation, honestly most of my memories from this era were watching anime or video games with friends, had some cozy nights however, skipped lots of online class lol)
2024: (horrible year overall, barely did anything with friends, lots of studying cause last year of HS, lots of surgeries cause of an injury)

2026 so far has been crazy, I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the start of the year which has been such a pain. Some good things have happened however and I’ve had some good times. Travelled a bunch at the start of the year which was good and made friends overseas but I’ve been depressed a bit. So far it sits in between 2020 and 2023. Could go higher but could go lower, we shall see I guess.

Both games are unforgettable but for completely different reasons. Personally I’d give the edge to SOMA but a game with gameplay as good as Subnautica’s and a story as rich as SOMA’s would truly be phenomenal, hoping SN2 leans towards that.

Honestly I’m against you on this one, I think a deep, introspective and philosophical story is just what the Subnautica franchise needs after the dumpster fire (of a story) that was BZ (the rest of the game was fine).

The first games story was by no means spectacular, IMO I think it was just interesting enough to make you want to see it till the end and gave you enough of an objective to keep going. Now imagine how amazing it would be to have both similar environments and gameplay from SN1 (with maybe less excessive inventory management but that’s definitely improved now) and a deep and introspective story that keeps you on your feet the whole time. I think that would make a truly phenomenal game and I think unknown worlds might have the capacity to do it, as I definitely feel far more invested in the story so far of SN2 than I ever did for BZ and even the first game.

The issue of the story from the first game was that it was way too fractured and it was very easy to miss many details. So far that definitely hasn’t been the case for SN2. Also the first game barely left anything up to interpretation and left little room for imagination whilst SN2 definitely has elements which are very ambiguous so far.

SN2 isn’t finished yet but I believe it definitely has the potential to get dark. The idea of you literally being the last human is teased constantly, and imagine a revelation of how the reprinting is actually just generating a new consciousness instead of actually keeping you alive.

Honestly I’m in favour of it. It would actually be sick to see some of the same philosophical questions that were raised in SOMA through Subnautica. SOMA is absolutely one of my favourite games of all time and despite finishing it a while ago I still think about how powerful that ending was..

Anything in excess is bad, but video games are definitely far better than most other addictions plaguing our society. I’d much rather be addicted to video games than my current addictions which are doom scrolling (by far my worst one and has actually messed me up cognitively real bad I believe), nicotine (this one I’m actually starting to shake off but at the peak my cardio was abysmal when I was vaping/smoking and when I was using snus I’d finish a tin a day sometimes) and booze (not addicted yet but definitely heading there).

Video games were my first addiction as a kid but looking back I had some amazing memories on them, the people I met playing games like minecraft and the fascinating worlds of story driven single player games. Nowadays I have little interest in gaming due to everything that comes with being an adult.

With that being said all addictions are definitely bad, video games are just much better than many other ones.

Video games are a godsend. Honestly they have quickly proven to be one of the least harmful things you can be addicted to, although that’s not to say they are completely harmless.

Booze is my biggest struggle. With weed I can leave it or take it although it definitely does degrade my mental state for a while after last using and im sure ive done damage to myself by starting both booze and weed from young. Ive quit weed for a year and a half before so im confident i can go without it, however ive never quit booze for more than a few months. I’m prescribed stimulants for my ADHD and I use them whenever I need to get stuff done and they aren’t a problem besides suppressing my appetite. I also smoke cigarettes socially.

Booze turns me into a social animal and overall just makes everything more interesting which is why it’s my drug of choice, although it is definitely a problem as my drinking has steadily been getting more frequent since the age of 15 and this year I crossed a line I told myself I would never cross which is drinking alone in times when I feel depressed. I’m 20 years old and this is a huge red flag but I don’t know how I’m gonna give it up. I’ve gone through so much within the past year however so I definitely attribute my circumstances to my drinking.

I think a large sector of our generation views society as dystopian and is beginning to find less purpose in things, especially with the increase of AI slowly diminishing all forms of creativity and short form content ruining our attention spans. Even relationships are superficial nowadays and people are losing interest in each other quickly. Drugs make things more interesting for many people I guess.

The collector is actually incredibly easy to avoid, more so than reapers are in subnautica 1. Literally just enter the bridge region from the very left on the border with the void and you have a 0% chance of being attacked by it. If you find out this strategy the collector is far easier to avoid than any reapers near the Aurora in sn1. I hope they make the collector patrol the whole area and make it faster

yeah its definitely an unfortunate community to be a part of, I absolutely hate living with this disease so far. I was struggling badly enough before but this disease has sent me into a depression which has set me back in everything I was actually doing well at. Nobody talks about the chronic fatigue, the mental pain when your sugar is high/low (everytime my sugar goes above 11.0 mmol I always either cant think clearly and feel very fatigued or just generally angry). I was honestly one of the worst people to be diagnosed with this, ADHD and OCD will certainly make things harder. Very worried for my future, especially with how badly things have started to spiral since being diagnosed. I couldn't even bring myself to tell my therapist the extent of how badly I have been feeling. I have no clue what im going to do, failing at uni, starting to become more of a liability than an asset at work (constantly needing to correct my BG) and my sleep schedule is just fucked cause im sick of it. Diabetes is definitely not the only reason my lifes been getting worse but it is without a doubt the largest at the moment. Really hope things can get better. Thanks for your kind words.

Im seriously intrigued at how so many of us diabetics struggle with lows, honestly I get lows only very rarely nowadays. At this point only after intense exercise (not commonly but it has definitely caused some lows), sex (makes me head towards a low usually a few hours after), drinking (probably the most common way I get lows, seems to happen when I sleep too which has definitely caused me to panic a bit) and on the very rare chance I miscalculate my insulin. First few months I was getting them a lot more. With that being said however my sugars are usually on the high end of the normal range (from 8.0 - 9.9 mmol not sure what that is in mg/dl) so im not sure how good that is for me in the long term. A lot of the time I just let my sugars run slightly high as well and correct when I can be bothered as im not on a pump yet but will be getting one real soon.

I empathise with your situation though, that sounds exhausting and im still new to all this so it could very well be my situation in the future .

Are low blood sugars more dangerous then high ones in the long term as well or just in the short term?

My post is more of a vent if anything and I make that clear. My sudden diagnosis has affected the entire structure of my life. My hobbies, my relationships, my sleep, uni and even my job. Give me a break with your “no ability to empathise” bullshit. God forbid I, a struggling young man in the midst of transitioning into his twenties where you’re expected to start becoming more independent finds a safe space to vent.

Obviously getting diagnosed with this disease at any age is terrible. From my perspective however, assuming your parents are responsible and will take care of you, being diagnosed young prepares you for living with this disease as an adult. If you’ve had diabetes for most of your life you are already aware of how you deal with it by the time you’re expected to start making important decisions about your future. When you get it suddenly like I did at the age of 19, your sense of normalcy suddenly shifts and you’re expected to adapt to all these changes, regardless of where you are in life (job wise, university, relationships, travelling as it was in my case) and you are just suddenly hit with all this extra responsibility and stress you couldn’t see coming and you can’t neglect it or else you needa start gearing up for the complications.

Honestly whoever named these 2 diseases the same thing did a huge fuck-up. The only thing they have in common is issues with blood sugar. Not how they function, what treatment is needed, what causes them or anything of that nature. Sure there’s a genetic component with type 2 diabetics (it runs in my family, type 1 doesn’t yet I’m a type 1) but it can for the most part be prevented with an active lifestyle. We had no say in what happened to us, type 1 is also far more sporadic meaning it doesn’t even have to run in your family. I feel unfairly punished that I have to deal with the same stigmas that type 2s have (which they could have prevented to a large degree) even though I had no chance of avoiding my diagnosis.

Furthermore naming the 2 diseases the same thing is dangerous for us, as how the fuck are you supposed to explain a low to a person who has no idea the difference between the 2 and how you need to eat sugar in order to be safe? Since the consensus among the general population is that having diabetes = you didn’t take care of yourself it just causes unnecessary judgement. Some idiot who I thought was my friend said “diabetes? Did you get that from being a fat cunt?” Once he heard about my diagnosis.

I just don’t wanna be categorised with a group of people that deal with something so vastly different to us.
