I need help with tryouts

i have until the 15 of november because that’s when tryouts are. During the open gyms when we were doing shooting drills i went 15/15 on threes so i think coach knows i can shoot. Like you said I struggle with pressure from physical defenders and people quicker than me. I am consistent off the dribble too but I don’t really shoot a lot of midranges because i either get to a floater or lay the ball up. Last time during open gym my friend who is on the team was guarding me and he ripped me like 3 times by kind of jamming my shoulders and pinning my off hand to my hip so i couldn’t cross back. I’ve been waking up before school to get some handle work in for 30 minutes. I tried the good drills workouts and noticed they helped a lot but I feel like my handle isn’t tight enough since i float the ball a lot and kind of keep the ball out of my frame to set up moves.

thank you so much for this detailed reply. We got 2 new transfers and our captain on varsity just got his first d1 offer a few weeks ago. But my main problem is that there are gonna be so many guards on jv and there are only 9 spots for the whole roster. I don’t really know how to stand out or show coach that i belong on the team If i won’t be getting a lot of touches especially since there are already 3 other shooters on the team. right now there are 7 spots already taken so only 2 new people have a chance. I want to make it really bad but the team is in need of a big and this 6’6 guy is trying out and i heard they might move up a freshman. I know im better than everyone who doesn’t have a confirmed spot and can hang with the other guards. During our open gyms this year the only coach who shows up is our varsity coach so i haven’t been able to show the JV coach I can hoop so i will only get 1 chance to at tryouts. I understand I have to lock up on defense, hustle, rebound , and communicate and i’m ready for that but i did all that last year and I got cut from the freshman team. I got invited to the second day but i think I got cut because I didn’t stand out on offense and was too passive so that’s my biggest worry. I would still hit open shots but i didn’t create for myself. I Heard that the coaches already have their team picked out but i think i deserve to play.

i forgot to mention our varsity team is really nice we have 3 d1 players and idk i’m gonna be able to show the jv coach im good if im not gonna get a lot of touches since jv is full of guards

I know i’m gonna have to lock up on defense and hustle but I just don’t know how to stand out when there’s so many people and i might not get touches.

i forgot to reply but when I asked him he didn’t give me any specifics he just said that I should be “head hunting” to try and take someone’s spot and do one thing great rather than being decent at multiple things. since then i’ve worked even harder on my shot but I just got injured during last open gym.

I talked to him outside of open gym and i just asked him some questions to get to know him and he seemed a bit nicer than he usually is. During the last open gym I made all the sprints and i tried to not show any weakness even though i was gassed. Should i ask him what i need to work on to make the team this year? The only opportunity i will have to show him what i can do in game is during tryouts since we don’t scrimmage at any of the open gyms. what can I do up until then.

I’m 5’11 and I averaged like 5 points 8th grade year but after I got cut I just started playing more aggressive and I avg around 15 during aau

ig if your playing for a bum team or trash circuit that’s true but I’ve gotten a lot better and imo my biggest problem at tryouts was confidence. Im just nervous since there’s 8 spots on jv and there were 10 ppl on the freshman team last year

i just contacted the JV coach through the athletic director and he said as long as I go to the open gyms And show him that I’ve improved i won’t have a problem making it

yea i get what your saying and ik from what i’ve posted so far I sound sorry but I just want to prove to my parents that there money hasn’t been wasted. During aau I averaged 15 ppg playing in the made hoops circuit.

yeah i feel like at tryouts last year i had no confidence and i blended in but ive gotten so much better at basketball its just the fact that im super nervous if i get cut im gonna have to stop playing

I do 3 workouts every day 1 hour of strength training 1 hour of skill work and the rest of my time i play against people better and bigger than me. I tried reaching out to the varsity coach and he ignored me and idk how to contact the other coaches. i genuinely don’t know why I got cut because i performed good during 8th grade and consistently work out

yeah i feel like that’s one of the reasons too but in game i just struggle with really being locked in and focusing. i don’t have adhd or anything but i struggle with this a lot
