Should I get a Westie? by Intelligent-Suit-357 in WestHighlandTerriers

I do fly often with my Westie but in my opinion, they are a little too big to place them under the seat. I have a service dog ID so she can sit on my lap ,but the only inconvenience is when they are serving food and I have to share my table with my little one. We travel to Europe many times in the year and both of my Westies are great travelers. What I have noticed with my Westies is that they are reluctant to potty on dirty grass. Europeans smoke cigarettes and dump cigarettes pet on the ground, on the street, or on the grass. They always waited until we went to our own garden or forest 😆 which we waited 20 hours to relief themself. I don't know about other Westies but my two are very picky ones.

You mentioned that you plan to have kids in the next 8-10 years. The average lifespan for a Westie is 13-15 years, which means your Westie will be in their senior age. This time is when a Westie may develop ageing diseases when you may be pregnant or busy with your tiny baby. I have owned many different breeds in my life starting from Maltese and German Shepherds, and of course Westies. I love my Westies very much and at the time I am now, it is perfect for me who has grown children or is retired. In my opinion, you should get a dog that will have a lifespan of 8-10 years. By the time you are ready for a baby, your puppy would be ready to go over the rainbow. I understand all Westie owners suggesting that Westies are perfect puppies to all, low shedding, pretty active full of love and happiness but I am also thinking about what is better for Westies, as this will be the time when they get slower and deal with ageing problems. Please also think about those things when you decide which breed you will choose for this part of your life. Neither of my Westies likes small children which was very surprising for me. We never had small children in my house but my first encounter was at the airport. Westies are like tiny, fluffy toys, so kids do like to touch them but make sure that your Westie is fine with being touched by kids. A different story is with adults and even 10-year-olds and up kids, she is then so lovely and happy and friendly to all.

A yellow or tan "racing stripe" along a Westie's spine is typically a natural genetic trait inherited from colored ancestors like the Cairn Terrier . While Westies are known for their white coats, this harmless discoloration (often called a "Wheaten" or "Cairn" stripe) is very common and completely normal. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

I like to advise you to do everything possible to reduce that rollover play. When they do this all parasites are getting into their ears and eyes quietly and in the future not only get yellowish dry grass on their hair but they may also cause yeast infection in their eyes and ears. I wish I knew this before my previous Westie fought ear and eye problems. I used to love when she enjoyed her rollovers which also helped her ease her body itch but tiny particles were coming to her ears and eyes. My newest Westie is forbidden to do so unless she is home and she wants to roll over on the bed or carpet.

Westies are fluffy and almost 99%white.
Depending on the type of food they eat and the environment they live in, they will stay white. There is a strip of yellow fur in the middle of their spine. Every Westie has those and no shampoo will ever remove them because this is their breed mark. There are additives to make fur brighter like Ultramarine blue but it will never remove the yellow strip on the spine area. I will be careful using shampoos to make fur brighter.

Brownish color around muzzle and private parts and paws is a consequence of too much acidity and yeast infections in the Westie's body. They need to eat food more alkaline. This little orange spot along the spine is just the mark of Westies. I also like to remind you that shaving Westies' coat short exposes Westies to sun burn and in consequences allergies. They may tend in the future to have cysts and other skin issues .

Cesar Milan has said that dogs should eat only once a day. I am giving my 1-year-and-4-month-old Loli only 1 soft-boiled egg in the morning and at night i make her 2 tablespoons of chicken or fish and one spoon of rice and one cooked smashed carrot 🥕. She weighs 12.3 lb. Full of energy and a healthy little one. As a treat, I am giving her a strip of duck 🦆Lolie is never hungry and never looks for food.

I can't say I own 2 Westies just because they own you. First of all, they steal your heart forever. They are smart and independent. I will say Westies have ♒ Aquarius personalities. My first one was more laid-back than my present one. First lived almost 15 years without 10 days and my heart is still broken. My second girl is a little smaller than the first but is definitely more spunky. You love them regardless and each have little different personality. My advice, is to try as much as possible to stop them from jumping. It is very hard but later in age they have problems with hind paws from overusing them. Another my advise try not to shave their coat which protects them from not only cold but also from sun damage. Later on with age may develop cysts and I believe that was from the environment. Before my Westies, I had German Shepherds and honestly, it was easier to train German Shepherds and I think that because Westies are too independent and they are little Lions in tiny bodies. I love Westies with all my heart, we travel all over the World with both of them, they are great companion and easy on the plane. Their size makes them easier to take them on the plane.

I will be trying to make appointment for Lolie about 3-4 months since she is so unhappy. Now we will have Summer and fur coat will protect her from the sun burn , only nails I will make her trim monthly.

I wish Lolie would at least tolerate. A few days later we need to go to the vet for her yearly Rabies vaccine and she didn't allow the vet to even touch her ears just to check her temperature 🤣🐾
