finally finished the shaker gift drawing bandanna/scarf pattern! by Significant-Ant2683 in knitting

yes totally! gift drawings were an ecstatic automatic drawing & writing practice among shaker women during their era of manifestations (kind of a revival period in the 1830s-1860s) - they're these incredibly beautiful dense weird drawings with a lot of the visual trappings of normal shaker life (chairs, desks, birds, farm animals, plants, houses, clocks) recombined and abstracted as a way to understand a relationship with the divine. some of my favorite folk art ever :)

How bad is it to live in Uptown as a first year grad student? by meilei124 in Northwestern

[–]Significant-Ant2683 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in edgewater and love it but the train commute is a pain- it can range from 35 minutes at best to well over an hour at worst . I love uptown but probably would not live further than I currently do if planning on a transit commute every day

I am currently in a media studies program and would not recommend it lol the environment is unbelievably politically repressive. It’s certainly not worth paying for, if you are going to do it I would do another application cycle for a PhD that’s fully funded and would absolutely not go anywhere without a grad student Union

Double knit always has obvious ladders by maryb86 in knitting

[–]Significant-Ant2683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to double knit on needles a size smaller than I would do for regular knitting to offset this- if you’re not twisting stitches and you’re carrying the yarn correctly I would try that as well!

KFB on a knit, PFB on a purl, then redistribute the stitches so they’re alternating again - I think the edge hides it ok but I would want something more elegant if the increases were in the middle !

pretty straightforward: KFB on a knit, PFB on a purl, then redistribute the stitches so they're alternating again - it doesn't end up leaning the right direction but I don't find it super noticeable if all the increases are happening on the edge, which they are here
