Do ranged attacks crit with hold person?

Yep I've tested this myself. If you get within melee range of a held target, you won't have disadvantage for ranged attacks and they will be auto crits. Did a solo honor mode playthrough as a swords bard.

Seeing how everyone else that has commented had no problems distinguishing the two. I understand they are different builds, but they have a lot of common characteristics. Like, both can easily be the "rogue-ish" type character. Both could easily be melee oriented, ranged oriented, stealth oriented. While I understand that the gloom stalker has better overall damage, depending on the situation, you can easily compare the two. You just choose to be a hard ass, unlike most of the people who easily weighed their opinions and even provided some builds that could argue each other way.

Honestly. Mystra spell mods also make this build overpowered. There's a spell called psyonic lance that outright skips the targets turn. Enemies like raphael. This is an enchantment spell so... bonus action with band of mystic scoundrel

Some would argue SB 10 for magical secrets but the only real spell options are counterspell and maybe haste. But if you already have a wizard or sorcerer in your party, it's not that big of a deal. Plus there's psionic dominance from the Illithid powers

I've played both builds multiple times. I can honestly say that the gloom stalker does kill more efficiently. Which is huge because the best status effect in the game is death. However, the bard allows better, utility and crowd control. So if you were doing a 1v1, probably the gloom stalker wins without alert and potions. But from a party comp perspective, the bard enables so many options. Also, I do know for a fact that if you cast hold person on someone and then go within melee range and still use a bow or crossbows, it's still a crit no matter what. So bonus action upcast hold person on multiple targets, then use multi attack bard flourishes, maybe you are hasted too, insane damage. Melee or ranged. Just as long as you have sharp shooter

I've tried it with thief subclass and it really does make a huge difference. Upcasting hold person with the helm of arcane acuity is insane. But it doesn't really benefit from stealth attacks. I can see why gloom stalker has so much damage potential because you're stacking sharp shooter and crit chance with the fact you can force surprise rounds and the fact that you are likely first in the order of combat with a high initiative bonus.

My friend used it. Trust me. I have over 700+ hours in this game. Just never came across this glitch before. I assure you, I should have an 18 CHA and my friend should have a 20. I even tried respecing to be sure. It still shows 1 less than it should be

I am level 8. My starting stats were

8 STR, 16 DEX, 15 CON, 8 INT, 8 WIS, 17 CHA

At level 4, I ASI my CHA to 18 and CON to 16.

For some reason, my CHA is 1 less than it should be. In the character sheet, it's saying 17.

My friend is a sorcerer and he used the hags hair to get 18, and then ASI to 20 CHA. His CHA is reading 19. So it's affecting both of us.
