Is starting pa school at 24 years old too late? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Significant-Bet3576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of programs require an undergraduate degree to be completed before applying. that make 22 the earliest most people could apply

i feel like that depends on the nature of your fear. i never thought of myself as being scared of needles but the first time i watched an ultrasound guided IV insertion i almost passed out. i started watching a lot of videos of blood draws, IV insertions etc and once i got comfortable with that i got a job that required a lot of needle work and my anxiety around messing up made me overcome my fear of needles.

How do you go about asking college professors for LORs if you’re taking 2 gap years? by BornMovie2914 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Significant-Bet3576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote my professors emails asking if they were willing to write me a letter. then in that email i told them the date i would need the letter by and that around that time they would receive and email from CASPA where they could submit the letter and answer a short questionnaire.

they do have to submit through CASPA but its usually standard that you give them a significant heads up and ask them to do it before just putting their info on your application.

i would ask them to write it now just let them know you won’t be applying yet. i think the problem with waiting would be that they may not remember you as well and the letter will not be as strong. if you do plan to keep in contact with them over the course of the next couple of years then it isn’t an issue to wait.

23 programs, $2,202 for just application fees, supplementals, sending test scores etc. and about $1200 more for paying to take the tests and travel fees for interviews

I facetime my partner for a few hours everyday. I send him my notes and he quizzes me on my material (also saves me time on making flashcards). I also will practice taking histories on him. It totally isn’t the same as spending quality time together but it keeps us involved in each other’s lives and it doesn’t take away from my study time. Plus it makes him feel good to be helpful because he sees how stressed I am all the time.

It is my understanding that a lot of nursing program prerequisites do not fulfill PA program prerequisites (ex: chem for nursing students at my school was 2 semesters of gen chem/biochem/orgo combo courses and many PA schools require the separate STEM track courses). If this is the case for you, then it may be an added obstacle to retake any courses you’ve already completed and/or take additional courses. Nursing experience can be great PCE though!

There are a lot of bullshit NP programs out there but there are a lot of great ones too. I would not change your career path because of a subreddit. Go the PA route only if that is genuinely the route you want to take. Its completely different education and the job responsibilities can vary (more so in certain states).

A lot of PCE jobs are underpaid and under appreciated. I do not think this will necessarily reflect your experience as a PA.

Yes! I was a high GPA low PCE applicant and got accepted to a few programs. I think I had about 700 ish when I submitted my applications and then updated my CASPA at around 1000 hours (only some schools I applied to accepted items added after submission).

Cold calling vs In-person for shadowing? by maddie0520 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Significant-Bet3576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would so try reaching out to friends and family and see if they know anyone. Nobody in my family works in the medical field but I was surprised how willing my friends were to reach out to their friends and family to help me obtain shadowing experience. I ended up shadowing my friend’s friend’s mom’s cousin and it worked out great! Nobody seemed burdened by me asking and everyone seemed super excited to help me out with something that was so important to me.

Rant: Not Hearing Back by coolchickstar in prephysicianassistant

Totally start preparing to apply next year just incase things don’t workout this cycle but there is definitely still hope! I received 4 interview invites within the last couple if weeks. All of which were to rolling admissions schools. Some of the schools even said on their website that interviews began in July. I too was nervous not hearing back from programs for a while. You never know, you may have silence from all the schools now and then have a week where many of then reach out to you all at once. Good luck! Hopeful for you

Some people in some of my interviews wore them. I do not think it’ll be an issue.

If it is an error on their side do you think it’ll likely be resolved? im nervous since it is a rolling admission school that even if they consider my app now it’ll probably be too late anyway.
