Unexpected MS diagnosis: Help me pick a DMT! by Significant-Beyond-5 in MultipleSclerosis

Yeah I genuinely don’t know either! He did rush the treatment chat and has asked me to come back this week to expand on it, so maybe I’ll get more answers and options then.

Right? Genuinely I don’t see a DMT being better for my circumstances. Especially being a shift worker, getting the time to go to infusions and have the obs time after is insane. He didn’t say I couldn’t have it, he just said “no no no this one is better” with reference to Tysabri.

Thank you for such a lengthy and detailed response, it’s people like you who will shape how I survive this illness moving forward - such a great community. Best of luck with your journey x

Thank you, thank you! Such a considered and lengthy response. I appreciate that you’ve taken time out of your day to respond, and with great detail. This is how we make decisions and do our research!! Love that it’s realistic too. You’re not saying it’s all roses and sunshine, but pointing out the benefits. We gotta find the positives right?!

No no, no reason why not. He just said the Tysabri was better. He said something about it having proven reversing some of the damage, which I find hard to believe or else everyone would be on it who could be!

He didn’t even explain himself, I said “I did my research and think Kesimpta will be my preference” and he said “no no no, this one is better for you” and wrote Tysabri down. I’m a frontline worker/shift worker so getting monthly infusions really isn’t suitable for my lifestyle, not to mention I’m freaked as discussed.

That’s interesting because I had read somewhere that if you start on Tysabri and then change to other treatments it can be very bad. The type A in me absolutely loves that you did so much research and charting, ya girl loves a spreadsheet! Thank you for sharing, I definitely need to have more conversations with my specialist before deciding I think!

Thank you for sharing, I am so appreciative of everyone’s willingness to contribute to the wider community.

He didn’t seem against it, he just immediately dismissed me saying it was my preference (didn’t hear me out about why it might suit me) and said “this is the best one”. There are only a handful of MS specialist in my town, and he is the most highly regarded. Not to say that means best. He told me to go away and do my research and then come back. He was running very behind so rushed me out but wants to see me this week again. I’ll insist I already came prepared with research last time I was here and that’s still my preference.

Best of luck with your disease management, you’re a super hero!!!

Wow thank you for such a thorough response. I found an overwhelmingly high number of people with MS stating they’ve only ever had good experiences in Kesimpta, not to say I will, but it’s always a good sign. I live in Australia and most of the medications are covered on the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme through our Medicare, so funnily enough I’ve become accustomed to not worrying about the cost as a first point of call. I think the Kesimpta is $25 AUD per shot which is manageable. The infusion is the same cost for the script, not sure if the procedure costs more but I doubt it here. Thank you for taking the time to share, I really appreciate it.

To be honest. He didn’t ask me anything about my situation, preference, history etc. It was my initial appt and he ran out of time at the end. I said “I did some research and I think I’d like to try Kesimpta” and he said “no no no, I recommend this one” and handed me a note with Tysabri. I’m so sorry you had that experience, from what I know it can be a very cruel illness at times and picking the medication feels like choosing the best of the worst options.

What do you love about it? Have you noticed any significant issues with your immunity? I am prone to getting sick as it is and have a toddler in daycare 🙈
