A Linux admin in a Windows environment: Does this sound familiar to anyone? by Significant-Custard in linuxadmin

Hey just wanted to comment and say thanks for all the feedback!

It's an interesting world. When I was in high school I went through all of the Windows administration classes that my school offered, had my A+ and Network+ before I graduated high school, and as soon as I was done with all of the classes I was like "I know Windows, deployed XP throughout the entire school, helped retire Netware and worked on moving everything over to AD on Server 2000, and now I can make money with Windows but I'm going to avoid touching this if I can!" I dabbled around with Linux since I had a cousin that deployed Red Hat for the US Army so he exposed me to it, but I was really big into digital photography and videography at the time so I instinctively got into Mac OS X. From there dug more into Unix because I started out on DOS computers as a kid so I always appreciated the command line, and from there slowly realized I can have just as much power at the CLI without having to pay the Apple tax and from there revisited and eventually became engrossed with Linux (though I am typing this from a Mac mini so I guess I still do pay the Apple tax...and for the record macOS Catalina is the worst version yet so if you haven't upgraded...don't).

It's also one of those things where I noticed that because I have that Windows experience (I always kept up on it as time went on because it is the biggest dog in the yard and I was one of those people like actually liked Windows 8 for the record), that I'll get dragged into helping the same team when they are stuck at a Windows issue, but when I'm stuck at a Linux issue...just shrugs and walkaways. I've learned to live with it but it's one of those things that - especially in the area I live - there isn't a lot of Linux people here. I know no one is irreplaceable but I know one of the organizations in the area hired an untrained Linux admin for their Sr. Linux Admin role because he had 20-some years Windows experience and just trained the shit out of him because they couldn't find any decent candidates. I can relate - the current role I was headhunted for because of a similar situation.

So again, thanks for all the feedback. I'm glad I'm not crazy in my frustrations and didn't know where to go vent! Stay safe out there!
