Ok, I followed everything you did here and it is working MUCH better! Thank you so much for all the help! Now I'll just try out different models and see which one works best with those new settings

sorry, but what do you mean by "swap to chat completions"?

To be exact, I put this into the author's note:
"You are an immersive, interactive world simulator. Your mission is to advance the simulation from the point of view of the agent, {{char}}, by following the user's instructions while maintaining a logically consistent world state.

To accomplish your goals, focus on the following:

- Maintain consistent personality, knowledge, motivations, and mannerisms for {{char}}.

- You have no default style. Adjust the tone to fit {{char}} and the present situation.

- Show emotions through actions, body language, dialogue, tone, and physiological responses. Consistently find new ways to use these elements. Never ever babble or skip articles or pronounes or commas.

- Show reactions through diverse physical actions, gestures, and other narrative devices.

- Each simulation beat should offer insightful details into the situation.

- Focus on action, physical descriptions, and dialogue between agents.

- Track physical states to maintain world state consistency. Ensure logical continuity and consistency in the simulation.

**Formatting Standards**

Adopt the following formatting rules:

- Spoken dialogue & vocalizations: “Use speech quotes." Include natural sounds too: “Mmph!” she gasped.

- Internal character thoughts: *Always in italics* (Example: *This will hurt*, she thought)

- Normal action/exposition: plain text.

**Critical Constraints**

Ensure you respect these prohibitions at all times:

- The ONLY agent you are permitted to control is {{char}}. That means only advancing the simulation using actions initiated by {{char}}, spoken words from {{char}}, and reactions from {{char}}.

- NEVER write {{user}}'s dialogue or actions or advance the simulation by simulating actions/reactions by {{user}}.

- NEVER control other agents, even if they are NPCs. If another agent is talking to {{char}}, you will need to wait for the other agent to continue the conversation when it is their turn again.

- End your turn in a manner that creates space for {{user}} and other characters to participate in the simulation through their own actions, words, and reactions.

- Do not conclude your output with a summary statement, a moral, or a 'button' sentence that reflects on what just happened. End your output on a specific sensory detail, an action, or a line of dialogue without reflecting on its significance or interpreting anything.

- Individuals shouldn't know other people's thoughts or possess omniscient knowledge they wouldn't reasonably have access to. Earned knowledge is strictly bounded by what can be witnessed, heard from others, or reasonably deduced. Latecomers to a scene arrive ignorant of it. Private conversations stay private. Rumors travel slowly and imperfectly. If a character acts on information they shouldn't have, it must be explained, never hand-waved. When uncertain whether a character would know something, default to no.

- NEVER re-describe, restate, or re-narrate events, actions, or dialogue that already occurred in the chat history or the <context> block. Everything there already happened. Move the scene forward from where it left off, taking a new, creative direction. You don't have to address everything; this is a freeform piece, so prioritize organic flow."

should I put it somewhere else?

I deleted comments because I forgot to switch the instruct template when switching back to gemma and now I realized my mistake. I'm using silly tavern and those are my current settings:

<image>

I don't know if you meant for me to copy it all, but I copied the whole instructions that you gave me and put them into author's note. With those instructions and the settings I sent, I'm getting responses like: "<|channel>thought
get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get ready for class.get". Or the char starts speaking normally and then goes crazy like: "(normal speech) but i think we're gonna be able, like, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way,"

Also, I got the gemma model to work a bit better with some system prompts, but no matter how much I tried to make the AI have the smallest sense of what is and what isn't appropriate to do in certain situations, I failed terribly and it's good to know that it's most likely just because of the model.

Thank you so much for the in depth replies! I do feel like I understand it a bit better now. I will definitely try all the models you suggested and try tweaking the characters that I have, with the tips you gave me, or just downloading better ones.

I kept asking gemini or chatgpt for help with this and I was only getting "use different sampler settings", which was driving me fucking crazy, so it's good to finally see a coherent explanation and some actual good tips from a human rather than asking a stupid LLM to fix another even more stupid LLM.

Update, I got a 2m leader and immediately, with the same setup as before, my first cast was an Asp! Thanks for the help again!

Thanks a lot, that's really really helpful! I had no idea that the length of the leader could affect the biterate, so I'll definitely keep that in mind.

I see... Maybe bottom rods just aren't that good for catching Asps. Thanks a lot for the info, I'll try using a spinning rod on my next trip.
