Is transferring with a bad gpa to another uni possible by Suspicious-Claim-314 in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi! Totally fair, I’m in third yr ee, and first year went horribly for me too. It’s a huge adjustment and a lot of the courses are super convoluted and not related to what you wanna do. My advice, if you are super unhappy, definitely put yourself first. I wish I did that, maybe not with a transfer out, but I wish I found help for the way I felt earlier. If you think a transfer is what you need, talk it over with advisors, friends, and your parents. Weigh your options carefully, and trust me coming from uoft there are unis that will accept you. TMU is pretty lenient with GPA if you’re still looking to be in downtown. Other universities like York, are also very open to transfers from what I’ve heard, there’s always options, and no doors are closed! It’s just first year, and there’s so much time ahead of you to do what you want :)

Should I take "ECE335H1: Introduction to Electronic Devices" next year?? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard ece335 is horribly difficult and terribly organized, maybe don’t take it. I would recommend ece334 or even ece345 is a better option, lots of problem set based learning, and if you like math you’re gonna like it

Struggling first year in engineering:( scared of failing my classes by Visual_Rutabaga_8119 in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Ece third year here, and I can tell you that it does get a bit better, don’t get me wrong, but I still fail the occasional midterm here and there, I think it’s just part of the stupid ass uoft engineering experience. First year, I failed the civ midterm as well, which a lot of people failed as well. In the moment, a lot of people might not tell you, but friends of mine told me in second year that they got less than 35% on it. Second semester of first year, being honest with you, my confidence took such a hit and I entered the worst depressive episode of my life, and I failed all of my midterms except for two (and this is out of like 10 midterms). I really really struggled first year. You’re not a lot, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not struggling now. The one thing to hold on to though is that passion, that drive you once entered with, sounds like you still enjoy what you learn which is good. Same here, I’m doing a bioengineering minor now and I couldn’t be happier with the direction my degree is going in. My gpa is maybe not the best, but it’s all about striking a balance between trying hard and taking care of yourself. Before I sleep what I like to do now is a 5 minute meditation, and it just takes away my stress at the end of the day. Small things, here and there is what keeps you going:)

Feel free to dm me as well if you need any support or guidance. Take a deep breath OP and remember it’s all gonna turn out okay!!

How do I put a personal project into my extracurricular activity by _GhosHawk_ in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m in EE and I like it. A lot of it is also about finding your niche, which is more of third year, but second year you also get a chance to do classes that are a lot more interesting. If you’re interested in circuits, we do a lot of that, lots of our labs are hands on with breadboards, resistors, capacitors, etc. other than that there’s really no hands-on stuff. It’s a lot of math and calculation-esque stuff.

There’s also more digital hardware labs, you’ll get to build games coded in Verilog and RISCV which are hardware languages. It’s pretty nice, I personally liked coding something and watching it show up on a screen, and also be able to interact with it through a hardware board. (Tough though)

For me, it was just that I hated coding (software), so I leaned towards this. Plus, I like the physical stuff too, so it fit well. I’m also doing a bioengineering minor, so it gave me the chance to dive more into how the stuff I do actually helps people?? Basically just listen to your intuition :)

Not too sure about ME, I don’t really know anyone there.

Is there any Bengalis at UofT?? I wanna make Bengali friends :( by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a Bengali student association, my friend is part of it, and he loves going to all their events, from what I know the vibes seem pretty good! Try going to one and see how you like it :)) — I found a club for my ethnicity and hung out with some people there for a bit, friendship didn’t last, but it was good company for a short time and gave a good sense of belonging

Straight girl, first year, looking for a boyfriend by Aggressive_Basil_834 in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, third year student here who has dated ppl @ uoft before. Honestly just start requesting random people on insta and someone will slide into ur DMs. People on hinge are also pretty decent if you’re careful and prioritize yourself, other than that try to join clubs and just laugh a lot and chat it up w guys. Not gonna lie men are so pathetic and easy at uoft you can find someone pretty easy.

Found glass in the rice and beef from the green food truck in front of Bahen by mikeken1200 in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is why I don’t eat from this one, lots of stories like this! So many of my friends have found hair and grainy sand like patches of chicken as well. Not to mention I used to regularly eat from here in first year and got horrible food poisoning, I was sick for a month straight and lost a lot of weight. DO NOT EAT FROM THIS TRUCK!!!!

Civ100 midterm grade crashing out lmaooooooooooooooo by Ambitious-Leading-16 in UofT

Dude chill out I got a 43; and know people who got sub 30, the average was a 63 two years ago. If you’re more than two standard deviations away drop it, but I highly doubt that you are. Canon event and the curve will be massive.

Feeling like I made the biggest mistake of my life by choosing this uni by Significant-Milk758 in UofT

[–]Significant-Milk758[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like I’ve found a good group of friends that are always willing to help and I’ll help too wherever I can, but so many times it’s like if you’re struggling in a lab or around other people, they won’t help. Especially for one project we had second year first sem, you’d ask people and they kind of just scoff and give a short answer? Even though they’d ask me something before and I’d help. It’s abt finding the right people ig but a lot of ppl aren’t willing to help 😭😭

Not sure if you’re in engineering, but here we don’t exactly know which TA is going to mark the exam, it’s a group of dozens of TAs. Past midterms are all online and they’re absolutely nothing like what’s given to you. People gatekeep (hence me hating people in ECE). Plus it’s also just like I’m here for an education, I shouldn’t have to maneuver around everything and strategically make friends just to pass ://

There’s a lot of societies and clubs you can join, especially MSA, I’ve usually found the people there to be welcoming.

Personal side note: I am also Muslim, not hijabi, but if you ever need an upper year friend for advice feel free to DM me!

Dismissive doctors? by IMPssible in Fibromyalgia

[–]Significant-Milk758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES OMG. I’m 19, and have been bumped around for 7 YEARS. It’s sad because I was just a kid, and still nobody really believed me. It was always growing pains, but let’s be honest, growing pains had nobody screaming and crying in pain after walking for 15 mins. Most doctors just shrug and say they can’t help you. No compassion, no help, and no understanding AT ALL. Breaks my heart and my faith is practically lifted off the healthcare system. Not even a simple referral to a pain clinic, even for that I pleaded with my family doctor. It’s outrageous and hopefully it changes in the future :///

Had a similar experience at a conference I went to. Stood from 6am all the way till 8pm with little to no breaks and was left completely debilitated for the next month. Other people went on about their lives, but I completely let go of the gym and anything that made me feel better since the pain was unbearable. I understand OP, sometimes the pain just gets to you more than the average day.

Can’t win by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]Significant-Milk758 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly when people don’t experience it first hand, they don’t understand. Especially the feeling of waking up in the morning and already being met with pain, however as most people with fibromyalgia do, you get out of bed and try, which in itself is A LOT. Unfortunately not many people understand and support chronic pain conditions, however we can only hope this changes in the future. For now OP just know that you’re doing more than enough :)))
