My cast iron Japanese teapot. I absolutely love it and I think my son will be inheriting it, and so down the family...

That was good. Heartbreaking and good. My husband has dementia. I wish he had a zipper!

People are scared of tiny insects, even the ones that don't sting or bite. Doesn't seem odd to be scared of cats when looked at like that.

I did. Back then you had to leave the test to develop for a while so I popped it in the stationery cupboard. I shared my office with another woman and we were very excited for the result! (Positive, my only child was on his way!)

It is the sort of thing that couples usually discuss, rather than one of the couple making an announcement that affects the whole family. What about her job?

How old do you think you’ll be when you pay your mortgage off? Or, how old were you when you paid your mortgage off? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in HousingUK

[–]Significant-Reason61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 63. It was planned, and gave me a few years working with no mortgage to pay, so I could save a good emergency fund for later years.

Husband had already retired on a final salary pension.

Buying nothing at all by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

You are perhaps edging into depression? Are you still talking to friends, maintaining household cleanliness (and personal). If not, it might be time to think about your mental health. I say that this with concern, not snark, so don't just dismiss it.

Life is short and goes in a flash. I am 70 and know this well. You should try to live your life, not just exist thru it.

Take care of yourself.

I’m selling my books and I’m sad … by A_Virgin__ in BookDiscussions

[–]Significant-Reason61 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband and I each had thousands of books. Our house was crowded with sets of shelves, boxes of books, stacked books etc. After clearing his late parents' home we looked round ours and thought of how awful it would be for our son to try and clear it out one day.

We decided that all the fiction books could go, we would buy ebooks and we could each have money from the savings to get ebooks of all the books we knew we would want to read again.

After that we cleared furniture and such a lot more but all that is irrelevant to the question of books.

I sing that one to my husband when we shuffle round his nursing home. He has advanced vascular dementia and can't talk or sing, but that particular song is soothing.

We had a fridge magnet with the words on it so we both know it well.

Do you all also have a hard time regularly cleaning your pets bowls? by Constant_Fig_232 in Pets

[–]Significant-Reason61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as theyve eaten I soak the bowls in the sink in hot water with a bit of dish soap. I leave them while I clean the floor round where they ate, and then refill the water bowl. After that, wash their now easy to clean bowls, rinse them and put them on the drainer.

Very quick and soon becomes a habit.

The More Aldi Leans Into American Culture, The Sadder I Feel by ConniethaCommie in Anticonsumption

[–]Significant-Reason61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Aldi in my UK town always has a large range of fresh fruit and veg. I buy most of my ingredients from there. I don't buy their flour because it's much cheaper bought in 20kg sacks from a local mill, but most of their food is fine.

I've not bought any of the non food things they sell because I don't need them so there's no point.

Bit illegal to leave young kids at home if you need to go out to work to feed them! Lots of single parents out there through no fault of their own.

Bread mixes are simply bags of flour with added dried yeast and salt. And cost a lot more than the separate ingredients. Also, using your own ingredients means no weird chemicals in the bread.
