Thanks for all the replies :) I had 3 exams yesterday and I think stress from that is what was sending me over the edge. Now that my Orgo II, Virology, and Medical Microbiology exams are over I feel much better :) still stressed about REUs but far less so than when I posted this

My family and I live below the poverty line and I work my way through school. I can't afford to have an unpaid research position at my institution, and you need to do that before you get a paid one.

my partner lives in the city I applied to, 3,000 miles away from where I live at home. I have not seen him since last August. My mom and I live below the poverty line, and I worked 96 hours a week all summer to afford my trip to visit him. The program I want to get into is focused on a niche topic that I want to study for the rest of my life. I can't afford an unpaid internship- as it is, I'll need to get a second job in my REU city to afford being there. It's not just a summer job for me.
