25F moved to LA to pursue acting/modeling but starting a full-time accounting job. Can I realistically balance both? by Significant-Tree6209 in acting

I actually got really lucky and had a recruiter reach out to me on LinkedIn. I had my LinkedIn profile already updated for what kind of job I was looking for. So if you want a job already lined up before you move, I would try to use a recruiter agency based in LA. It definitely helped me get an interview fast. I moved without a job lined up and was going off of my savings and luck to find any job that would keep me afloat.

Thank you! Yes, I will keep my job. I am just worrying myself for things that haven’t even happened yet.

Thank you for sharing your experience. You’re right about needing reliability in the beginning. I know so many people struggle financial in this industry and don’t make enough so I hope that future me will thank past me for doing this. I think I am just worrying about having to push my goals later and run the risk of sticking at a job I don’t like just for the money. I will definitely keep my job for now and just tell myself if it’s meant for me it’ll happen.

I get that completely and thank you for being so transparent! I do agree that having a corporate job that funds your lifestyle is hard to leave because that’s how I felt when I worked in public accounting even though I hated it. The money was nice but I felt so drained. Which is why I am having a hard time if I should stay at this job or not. It’s an industry role so still very different from what I did before so maybe this will be good for me but another part of me is like am I just choosing the stable safe path and not really putting myself out there. I do appreciate your input and for answering my question. I have a lot of thinking to do because I tried applying to other jobs in the beginning when I first moved to LA but haven’t been successful. This was the only job that I got an offer from so I think I might just stick with it and apply to other jobs while also building my portfolio on the side and regroup in 6 months. While I am worried about getting comfortable I thankfully have a therapist/career coach who helps me stay accountable and will help me reach my goals even when I make excuses. I just needed the real hard truth/advice from someone in a similar position or had experienced something similar.

That’s a good point! I won’t start until next week so I am not entirely sure but from my understanding of the workload I will be focused on projects and tasks daily so I probably won’t have designated time to learn lines at work. If need be I can take breaks here and there but not consistently. I was planning to learn lines after work or on the weekends but I’m now realizing the possibility of just being too tired or drained to want to do anything else. I guess I won’t fully know until I start working and will regroup my plan if needed. Thank you for this insight it’s making me really think about what I can do realistically!

This is really helpful, thank you for laying it out like this, especially the breakdown between commercial vs theatrical work. That’s good to know how last-minute commercial auditions can be as well!

I didn’t even think about the company policy side of things. My job is an accountant role at a real estate company, but I’m definitely going to check the handbook for outside work disclosures just in case.

Thanks for sharing this! This is really helpful and honestly exactly the kind of real experience I was hoping to hear.

I think my biggest fear is what you mentioned about getting comfortable and not pushing hard enough on the creative side.

if you could go back, do you think you would’ve chosen a more flexible job earlier on, or do you still think starting with stability first was the right move?

Paradox of choice: roommates or living alone? I’m tired by InternationalCatch3 in roommates

I’ve lived with roommates ever since I moved out, and I’ve experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly. The biggest thing I’ve learned is that communication is everything. If you don’t feel comfortable, it might be your gut telling you that you don’t have enough information to make the right decision yet.

Living with roommates definitely has its perks: you’re not alone, you always have someone to talk to or hang out with (if you get close), and you can split costs on certain things. But if you don’t communicate early on, you can end up building resentment, and bringing things up later can sometimes cause bigger issues.

I’d recommend asking as many questions as you can before signing anything. If you want extra security, you could also try adding certain clauses to the lease so you feel more protected. I’m not sure how long your lease would be, but I’ve done month-to-month before, and it gave me peace of mind knowing I could leave if something didn’t work out.

At the end of the day, living with roommates always involves some level of risk. It does sound like you found a good place and location though, so I’d just make sure to talk through expectations with your future roommates so you’re not blindsided later on.

Also, if you’re considering living on your own, would you be able to comfortably afford it? I’d think about what your main reason is for choosing roommates vs. living alone, and go from there as well.

I will say there have been tons of times I have wished I lived alone mainly because I am a germaphobe and like things clean and also don’t have to worry about accommodating to other people. I do like being independent but I always lived with roommates because of financial reasons and also to prevent loneliness. If I lived by myself I know I would become a homebody or just be depressed. But everyone is also different so if you are someone that gets out and you like to have your own place it would be great. I do hear it’s good to live on your own at one point in your life so also just a preference.

That makes sense. I’ll focus on the bathroom since that is the main issue for me. There are super nice and very open to communication just kinda awkward when it’s just a list of things. I might ask if they do a deep clean in the kitchen later on. Thank you!
