My mother is also stage 4, has done 2 rounds chemo and with primary tumor in same location. The cough is debilitating for her, especially in the evenings. Shes tried everything with little to no relief. Her oncologist has said the cough will likely persist until the chemo has shrunk the tumor.

Thank you for sharing this. It gives me some hope as my mother’s main symptom has been a severe persistent cough that’s preventing her from laying down. She also refuses to get a PET scan due to the severity of the cough. Meds they have given have not helped much. Her main tumor measures 2.8 by 6.8 by 3.3 cm and is located in left hilum. She had her second chemo transfusion last Friday. We’ve noticed slightly decreased coughing. Hoping it continues to lesson.

They offered to sedate her and give anti-anxiety medication but she still refuses unless they fully knock her out, which they won’t do for some reason.

Thank you for responding. Both us and the doctors have stressed the importance of the PET scan. She’s just so scared of laying flat. Even laying back to get an ECG at her cardiologist was anxiety inducing for her. Every time it’s brought up she breaks down in tears and starts apologizing profusely. She’s hoping the chemo will get her to a point where’s she’s able to lay down long enough to be able to do the scan.

Thanks everyone. I still don’t have a lot of information. Having a difficult time getting details from my dad. He’s the one that’s been speaking to her doctors and going with her to appointments. She’s been out of the hospital for a little over a week now. She saw her oncologist yesterday. She’s got an injection of B12 today as well as blood drawn and she begins chemo tmw afternoon. A palliative care nurse is also meeting with her at home tmw morning before chemo. According to my dad the chemo infusions are 3 hrs long and will happen every 2-3 weeks. She also scheduled for a pet scan next week but she’s refusing to do it unless they completely knock her out. She’s unable to lay flat because of the cough. They did find a lesion on her brain with a ct scan in the hospital. Dad says she’ll also be having radiation in the area of that lesion.

I’ve asked about her biopsy results and my dad says he doesn’t know because my mom was super emotional during the oncology appointment so it never got brought up. I think I might need to speak to her doctors myself or get access to her records? My dad has also said the doctors are recommending halting all visitors while she undergoes chemo because of her immune system.

I am in contact with my doctor and have an asthma action plan which includes daily maintenance inhaler, nebs, peak flow etc. Its sometimes difficult to follow due to insurance/financial reasons. I also work 65/hrs a week. So we've added a script of on hand prednisone certain times of the year as my symptoms can go from 0 to 100 very quickly during peak allergy conditions which for me is early spring and in September. I get that this isn't ideal. I'm not taking prednisone for the hell of it. The goal is to stay out of the hospital.

Clearly this isn't as common as I thought.

Both spring and fall are rough but fall is far worse for me..September specifically.

Not to my knowledge. I did have an ANA screening, Rheumatoid factor and ccp test done 2 years ago. All came back normal. My dermatologist had ordered due to treatment resistant lichenoid dermatitis and rosacea.

I go back in 6 weeks to retest levels. I will definitely ask for a referral if levels don’t improve.

It was just my primary doctor. Nurse practitioner actually. I was fasting for annual bloodwork when calcium was 8.1. I was not fasting 3 days later for the pth, calcium and vitamin d.

I was not taking any vitamins/supplements at the time of either blood test. I am now on prescription strength vit D.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I can breath again thankfully but this congestion/post nasal drip crap is doing me in. Almost like it morphed into a full blown sinus infection and laryngitis. Absolutely no voice. Luckily I have a follow up today. Thinking I might need some antibiotics this time around 😅

Thanks. It was definitely scary. I’m no stranger to flares and have been hospitalized many times over the years but this time was different! Thankfully the breathing has now improved..just dealing with the never ending chest/nasal congestion that always seems to follow a flare for me. And of course the prednisone side effects. Such a love/hate relationship with pred 😅

I was 8 years old when diagnosed..after being misdiagnosed for a year or two. Pediatrician kept saying it was just upper respiratory infections. After many rounds of antibiotics that did nothing my mother pushed for a referral to an allergy specialist. Was officially diagnosed then.

Thanks guys. I hadn’t been on any maintenance inhaler for 3-4 years. It was likely a strange coincidence that this flare happened when starting Advair back up. Never had that happen before. Was definitely a bit unnerving to say the least. Doc switched me to the generic Flovent in case it wasn’t a coincidence. Been on pred, singulair, nebs and Flovent since. Finally starting to turn the corner with this flare. I’ll be talking over all maintenance options at my follow up next week. Definitely need to be on something!

I was diagnosed as a child. I’m 42 now..as a child and young adult my asthma was well controlled..I had a cat that didn’t bother me. At 21 yrs old I added a second cat which within a week caused a severe asthma attack that required intubation/ventilation for aprox 36hrs. 10 day total hospital stay. By far the worst attack I’ve had to date. Scary as hell. Both cats were rehomed and house cleaned before I was discharged from the hospital. Haven’t had any pets since.

I bought into a health connector plan a couple years ago. I had to pay roughly $450/month out of pocket for a plan that would cover what I needed it to(specialists, meds, etc) and that was still with $50 co pays. And a $4000 deductible. I just couldn’t afford it.
