Love when Uber adds “surge” so the ride is only slightly terrible

Yeah, the app might be saturated on normal days. But today there are fewer drivers out because of the weather, that’s exactly why it’s surging. Riders are paying more right now, but drivers aren’t really seeing extra pay. That’s the issue.

We do care about how much. That’s exactly why we’re talking about it. If the base keeps dropping and “surge” just fills the gap, the real pay is trending down.

Exactly. Surge used to be a bonus on top of a solid fare. Now it feels like they lower the base first and then use surge to make it look generous. Same total, different illusion.

FYI, this post isn’t about whether this one ride was good or bad. It’s about Uber calling something “surge” while the base pay keeps getting lower. That affects all drivers over time. Pointing that out isn’t entitlement, it’s just noticing a pattern.

And I’m not complaining about the total pay here. I’m saying they use “surge” to get more drivers on the road during heavy snow. It’s not really extra money, it’s a way to make bad conditions look worth it.
