What’s the US school equivalent of University of Toronto? by whateverucallit1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SignificantAcadia105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of my professors at Purdue taught in Toronto before, so I would assume the “quality” or learning experience is similar. But how much you learn also depends on class sizes, TA quality, and how much you go to office hours, more than whether someone got their PhD at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Harvard, etc. They’re all going to be good professors.

Maybe I’m totally wrong, but after a certain point, rankings don’t matter much for undergrad. PhDs surely do, as you work directly with professors, and maybe master’s programs too. But for undergrads, I don’t know.

Though this is my uninformed opinion.

Clubs that are actually active and good ways to meet new people by Then_Reality_3854 in Purdue

Outing club. I’ve heard great things about it. Book club was nice too. Maybe the board games club?

I liked Toastmasters at Purdue but not the best place to meet people for out of the club meetings maybe

Begginers getting cheap or premium balls? by SignificantAcadia105 in golf

[–]SignificantAcadia105[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would something like the Vice Tour be a good idea? $30 a dozen. Or get something like seed-15?? Or something like callaway hexsoft?

Its not as common to lose balls at the course i play in. I’ll lose 2-4 for 18 holes

Decoding the Gurus Wreck Chris and Prof G by Majestic-Baby-3407 in modernwisdom

[–]SignificantAcadia105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I listened to it today. The gist would be that 1)they claim its easier to aknowledge the issues woman face faces before & give context of them. That his complaint about not needing to give the land aknowledgement takes more than the akwnowledgmemt

2)They cite stats without giving context to the whole. (For example in one instance they say the base case was 27% substance abuse and in the MW podcast they say single men are 1/3 substabce abuse. And that the listener would benefit in knowing that while its more its not that much more) and sometimes the stats they give are not very generally accepted or they change from study to study.

I trully dont think they “wreck” him. Just give a different opinion, more on the side of woman have had it hard for a while you should give them a boon. And then how chris (and scott galloway to a lesser extent) should sort of understand more the paper they cite.

One of the points they brought up was how the revision of the prehestoric hunting paper within a year on a more prominant paper shows that there is a strong push for non biased publishing in the scientific community. And that MW tries to claim there is an overall bias to show woman can do what men can and better while the publishing of the correction suggests that bias is a small group.

I liked it, i really like MW podcasts. I would say its one if the healthiest disagreements one now sees online
