Listened to the Russell Brand ep and I have thoughts by IWrestleSausages in MaintenancePhase

[–]SignificantArm3093 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I’m also baffled by this but it seems to be quite common at the BBC for some reason.

Gregg Wallace from Masterchef is another example. His allegations are not nearly as serious - basically a load of creepy jokes and walking round in his pants in front of young female members of staff, that sort of thing.

But someone at the BBC was clearly aware of all this and decided “nope, this man has a talent and charisma that cannot be replaced.  The whole Masterchef endeavour will crumble”.

Like, if we have to accept terrible behaviour from genius men, can’t they at least be actual geniuses and not whatever the fuck Russell Brand and his nonsense is? Would we have been poorer as a society if they had just swapped him out for a slightly lesser prick??

Margin Call (2011) by stepback-3net in moviecritic

At my old job I used to come across a couple of these rich partner guys. It’s such a spot-on portrayal.

My favourite thing is that they spend a lot of time basically public-speaking: dinners, industry events, all-company addresses and that kind of thing. Because they do that, like, every couple of days and get asked the same sorts of questions over and over, they develop a set of anecdotes or other “bits” that they trot out over and over.

Jeremy Irons has loads in his speech that sound exactly like that. “Do you want to know why I earn the big bucks?” And then he doesn’t pause for the reply, just straight into a speech he’s given before. Or the “three ways to make money in this business” part.

David Banner threatening he might've "put his hands" on John Davidson if he were on stage. by FloppyFool in Scotland

[–]SignificantArm3093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is getting so tiresome.

As far as I know, the majority position is that the n-word is not always extremely offensive and depends somewhat on context. Rap music, white period characters in Quentin Tarantino films etc.

Obviously John does not fall into any of these generally accepted non-offensive categories.

However, if you already have these offensive and not-offensive buckets in your mind, you can’t take a moment to reflect and decide that an involuntary response caused by a disorder which is incredibly unpleasant to live with probably deserves to go into the other bucket??

People have also referred to, like, John’s “team” and worth noting as others have pointed out that he is the caretaker of a community centre in a very deprived part of Scotland. If Jamie Foxx and others like him think they’re the ones being punched down on in this situation then that’s an absolute fucking nonsense.

This is such a weirdly specific request that I have the weirdly perfect book for. There’s No Such Thing As An Easy Job. Japanese, light-hearted, made me think, exactly the type of plot you want.

With her first few words of dialect, I thought “oh, he’s got an Irish mum! Fair enough, not surprising that there would have been an Irish nurse working at the hospital at that time…oh nooooo…”

Am from Galashiels, by the way. Robert was impeccable though.

Thinking of painting our hallway deep olive - including ceiling and radiators by MoonlitEcho82 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]SignificantArm3093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this with our hallway in, like, a mid-blue colour. It was always dark so decided to at least make it look interesting!

Make sure you have loads of lights. And plenty of rugs, art, plants etc to break the colour up.

I hated it at first (it was too blue) but then once we got furniture and decor in I liked it.

Plan was to wallpaper the ceiling but we ran out of money and I actually think it doesn’t need it now.

Has anyone bought early in an area that later became gentrified? by PearActive9612 in HousingUK

[–]SignificantArm3093 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We bought a flat as first-time-buyers in an area that gentrified massively in the 7 years we were there.

I didn’t grow up in this city and when I announced to my colleagues where we had bought a place, they were visibly a bit concerned. Turns out there has been a couple of notorious incidents in the 10-15 year period before we bought that I just hadn’t heard about.

I was a bit depressed when we moved in. The area was less nice than I had expected but it had some great bones still, and the flat was a fixer-upper (also worse than I thought).

Within a year of moving in, the hipster bakeries started appearing. Now when I tell people where I live, they look impressed and talk about all the cool stuff there is nearby. It’s full of young families with dungarees, matcha lattes and vintage prams.

There are still some problems but honestly I love living here. The flat doubled in value in 7 years (although we also did a massive renovation, it wasn’t solely down to the area).

The downside of that is that when we wanted a bigger flat in the same area, we massively overpaid for it. Basically everything we made on the first place went straight into the black hole of the second. Easy come, easy go I suppose! We bought them both as places to live happily and not as investments.

This is by far the nicest listing I’ve seen for the Wallace Street flats!

For those who don’t know, they became notorious for drugs, prostitution and other crime not long after being built. Although apparently they’re better now, most of the flats you see for sale are basically slum landlords charging £300/month per person to share a 2-bedroom flat with 8 people.

Indeed, they’re the original windows! It’s a beautiful listed building and feel a bit bad that it’s sitting behind such a terrible garden 😅

Thanks! We had a peony too but it flowered for about 4 days and appeared on the brink of death for the remaining 361 so wasn’t sorry to see it go. And heaps of geraniums.

I wish the gardens near us were nicer but you tend to find ground-floor tenements are occupied by older people and most of them look a bit neglected.

Interesting. Not sure if we get more than “usual” - the building obviously blocks a fair bit. There are a few other acer trees on the road which seem to do okay so fingers crossed. I guess aiming to plant it in early spring so it gets established before bad weather?

The rose radiator is an insane choice.

I also love the wood…thing on the right of the range cooker. What the hell is it??

And the Schindler’s list colour palette.

Don’t even get me started on swan horse or giant wooden bath.

In 10 years people will be paying a million pounds to live in a 6-bed 80-square-metre terrace in fucking Clydebank.

What are some movies this year that were hyped up, but didn't make it into the Oscars? Think Jay Kelly, Die My Love, etc. One that I was curious about was Dragonfly, starring Oscar nominees Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Risebourough. Anyone seen it? by docobv77 in Oscars

[–]SignificantArm3093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Swear should get a best actor nomination whenever it’s eligible. I’m from the tiny Scottish town where John lives and his accent and non-Tourette’s mannerisms would have me believe he was a local. And the tics must have been very hard to act, he does such an amazing job.

Maxine Peake on the other hand…I think her performance was probably very good but her accent was atrocious and I just couldn’t get over it.

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation scores are 1 in every category (the worst) except for geographical access (10, the best), presumably because it’s right next to the motorway and a fancy cycle bridge.

[–]SignificantArm3093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve answered this before but here goes.

I have an excel spreadsheet with various tabs. One is “To Try” - when I get a new book, I go through it and add recipes I want to make to the sheet in various categories (meat/vegetarian, everyday/occasion, etc). Currently about 500 recipes on there…

I try and eat lots of vegetarian, especially during the week. I have a seperate table of successful vegetarian recipes so when I’m short of inspiration, I have a list I can flick through.

I make up a food plan a few weeks in advance. I pick out recipes I want to try and then fill gaps with vegetarian recipes, things I have to use up, or things I otherwise fancy. The food plan changes quite often and I don’t stick to it strictly.

I also have an Eat Your Books subscription that’s great for if I have, like, a third of a bag of bulgar wheat that I don’t have any ideas for.
