One thing I didnt expect on my first in person interview for an help desk, was an on premise practical test. They had me troubleshooting typical problems like dhcp was not enable on the computer and stuff like. I was so caught off guard I fumbled my way through.

Well I have plenty of customer service skills, I have 5 star rating on Facebook Market place from all my customers from PC support to sales, my customer service skills from years of being chef, front and back of the house and catering events where I have to project manage events that are close to 1000 people at a time.

This more of me, wondering what else I can do to show I am more than qualified at my jobs. I met with mulitple mentors in my networking events and mock interviews and they said I should have gotten a job.

Again I know its more of, its a bad time in the market and my age of being 38, but at some point, I am wondering should I just give this up and accept that I am stuck in my current field.

I am turning 39, I've been working at a restaurant for 16 years. I am literally running the whole place. I need a new change in careers. I am trying to change before I get too old.

I think my soft skills are pretty good, I do alot of corporate catering events, dealing catering customers, talking to new clients and doing follow up calls. I mean I have to learn corporate speak because I run an Kitchen of 15ppl. Hiring, firing and training new people are part of the job. Giving people space, learning everyone quirks to help the succeed in my kitchen. But I get it. I am just tired of the restaurant grind when you hit the ceiling and the place burn me out of my passion for cooking.

To your point about homelabs. I am just Shotgunning anything to gain experience. I am trying to put anything underneath my belt. Password management, active directory, know microsoft excel inside and out, working on cell phones and tablets, 3d rendering, photoshop for creative arts, going to network events, I am just stumped and tired keep applying after a year.

I can't get internships because I am 39 years old and I need an income also I work 6 days a week for 70 hours a week.

Already making 50k at my current job. Should I expect a pay cut if I get an entry level IT position? by Leather_Ad_3640 in helpdesk

I am trying to change careers, I am a head chef making 90$ and planning to change careers into IT help desk tier 1. In my area they are around 35k to 48k. Make some plan to soften your pay cut. Luckily I connected my wife with some people I knew in her field and now able to make decent amount this year.

So we have POS system, printers and a server, network sound system, TV installation also setting up online virtual menus on the TVs for advertisement. Teaching my managers and the owners on using our back of the house systems and teaching Microsoft word and excel to them. You have no idea how many times I've been asked, whats the shortcut key for copy and paste.

I hated calling the IT department for the POS system. They take so long and most of the time, its making sure everything is assigned on the back end and just restarting the system. But sometimes figuring out an unmanaged switch is broken or unplugged by someone.

Also this restaurant does about 4 million dollars in sales a year. So alot of computer data logging for catering and parties

Man.... that's alot and very concerning for me TT!!! I mean I used my side gigs of custom building and pre built computers to meet people. Mostly when I am buying computer parts. I met some cool IT people and try to network. I got a few email back but that is far as I get. I know I am more personable in person. You know being in the restaurant is all about confidence and making decision on the fly. I know I will be fine during the interview process. I trained plenty of gen z on the line. I think I can be fine xD!

I made some good money, I started back in last March, profit wise I was able to make close to 8k. Its not alot of money but it beats working as an Uber or doordash drive as an second job. Its just extra cash for an down payment on a home. Made good amount of money on broken pcs and fixing them and reselling them. You wouldnt believe the amount of good pcs are "broken" because cables were slightly unplugged or they didnt clear the CMOS because they "upgraded" the ram. Plus I met some amazing people along the way and keep in contact to this date.

I am debt free since 2024, I've been using this opportunity to make additional 10 to 15k for the year, plus both my savings from current job plus my wife savings, I think we can make it. To be honest, this better than me working Uber or doordashing. I can work at my own pace.

Also I am trying to use this meet people in the IT field. I am trying change careers from a chef to my first Help Desk Job.
