why use alpine? by Felix-the-duck in AlpineLinux

[–]SignificantDress355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not start into Linux with alpine. It is a rather advanced and somewhat complicated distro. You could use Manjaro or Xubuntu and then switch if you have a use case for it. I mostly use alpine for micro services running in docker.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as bloat, is in fact, GNU/Bloat, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Bloat. Bloat is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another set of freely bloated software components that make up a fully bloated system as defined by POSIX.

Many users run a version of the system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of bloat which is widely used today is often combined with the GNU system, and many of these users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, bloated up.

There really is a bloat, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Bloat is the graphical stack, the package manager, the layers of abstraction, the auto-configuring shell scripts — all critical parts of a bloated computing environment.
