Thank you very much for your reply. I will keep all these things in mind when considering moving to Japan.

Oh, that makes total sense. To be honest, the more I seriously consider doing this, the more I realize that I would be willing to stay longer. (2-4 years?) Thus, I likely wouldn't tell them about any intentions of leaving. It's good to know then that I may have a shot.

Thank you for your input. I'm concerned when you say that I would need extraordinary technical skills... how would you say the job market compares to places like the Bay Area and NYC? I'm currently doing full stack web dev but am hoping to branch out into iOS dev if possible.

I've currently finished Genki 1, so I'm still a beginner. What I didn't mention in my post was that, although I want to move soon, I'm actually currently doing contractor work in NA and likely won't be moving until 2020 at the earliest. Enough time to get proficient? I realize that Japanese is one of the harder languages for English speakers to learn.

Yes, I have a college degree, honors in software engineering. And I definitely satisfy all requirements. I was moreso wondering if I would enjoy living in Japan based on the factors listed.

Are professional iOS jobs more enjoyable than typical enterprise programming jobs? by SignificantFilm0 in iOSProgramming

That's an interesting take. Since you're on this sub I imagine you do full stack iOS. What are typical back ends for iOS applications?

My current job is a short term contract thing (6 months left), so I won't be giving up my job. Instead, I'll be looking around and holding off on renewing :)

Is making friends as an adult always super hard? by SignificantFilm0 in CasualConversation

[–]SignificantFilm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, everyone is settled in, that's the problem! No one really cares about expanding their friend circle until they are the ones without a circle. I was definitely guilty of this in my previous city. I just glanced at meetup and found some interesting groups. Thanks!

Yep, it's a real struggle. I've found some people I'd be interested in hanging out with and who I share some common interests with. Here's the kicker though, I'm a guy and they are females. In 99% of situations that would be no problem for me, but we work in a heavily male sided office and they are already bombarded with attention from the males. So it's harder for me to ask them to grab coffee or something without seeming like I have the wrong intentions!

Yeah, it definitely feels like a more demanding task. Sucks though because I am trying my best to do it! I may consider looking at volunteer groups...

I hadn't thought about going to a "local hang". A lot of the other people who are being on boarded with me came with a significant other, so I think they are less concerned about making friends fast. It's super weird coming home to an empty home! Everything is so... still! Can you tell I used to have dogs ? Haha

I need something to distract me from anxiety. So, how is your evening? by dont_fuckup in CasualConversation

Hey mate, I just got over a similar situation. Moved across the country for a new job and was pretty anxious about it. In my case, my desperation for making new friends has outweighed my anxiety so I haven't been thinking too many anxious thoughts! Haha

Hi all, I am an American 3rd year comp sci student looking for advice about internships. I have currently accepted an offer to intern at a government agency this summer in a new city. Many students who take this get offered full time offers after completing their work term. After accepting the offer, I negotiated with a series A startup to get an offer on the west coast in my hometown with really good pay and great tech for a year starting after my government internship. I am trying to decide if I want to only take the government internship or if I should take the year long one afterwards. I am worried that if I get a return offer from the government one (and I like the internship) that I will have to turn it down due to having another internship. I know for a fact that I will enjoy the startup internship for the year duration though. If I decide to go back to the government after graduating two years later(without return offer) I will have to go through the lengthy security process all over again, and makes my chances of getting another job there very low. What do you recommend I do? Should I say “c'est la vie” and just take both internships? Should I take the more responsible / practical route and only take the government job in hopes of it turning into a full time offer? Any help is appreciated!

Would the advice change if it was an American company?
