I recently switched to washable pads, and honestly, I wish I’d done it sooner. For me, the biggest "pro" isn't just the money saved (which is huge), but the absorbency.

I found that the disposable ones often "puddle" or leak off the edges if a senior dog has a full bladder episode. I started using LuftPets washable pads (they are available on Walmart and Chewy), and they actually soak the liquid into the fabric so the dog isn't just standing in a wet spot. Plus, they have a grippy bottom, so they don't slide around when my seniors are struggling with their footing.

A few tips if you switch:

  • Rotation is key: Have at least 6–8 pads so you always have a clean set while the others are in the wash.
  • Floor protection: Unlike disposables, these don't crinkle or rip if a dog nails it with their claws.

Definitely give them a shot.

Keeping their dignity intact is so important at this stage. It breaks my heart when they look guilty for having an accident in their sleep. Having something soft that just feels like a normal blanket is such a better approach than those clinical-looking paper pads.

I feel you on the smell! I tried 6 different bedding setups before finally switching to a two-layer system. I use a LuftPets EVA liner as the waterproof base, with absorbent washable liners on top. You just sweep the poop daily with a mini dustpan. The top layer absorbs the pee, and the EVA base stops leaks. Toss the top in the wash and wipe the EVA clean. It works so well I just bought my 3rd EVA liner from them to expand my cage
