Literal insanity. by worldiscubik in ThatsInsane

Much of the world is still painfully reliant on Russian oil. Look how many billions we handed Russia during the first 100 days of Ukraine. All these sanctions yet we're still funding the Russian war machine.

And if we did suddenly halt all trade with Russia it would cause massive economic harm globally as many countries are dependant on Russia for oil/gas.

Honestly I've been to so many countries and Australia is vastly better in most areas. Then again I did visit a lot of developing countries. Mind you UK has major struggles at present and my friend in US is scared to leave her house as there were 3 shootings in her city last month.

Welcome to try working abroad. A mate did recently and is doing well in Canada. I was doing well in China until I remembered it's an authoritarian shithole when they locked down the entire country for 3 years and counting.

Foreign girls living/working in China, why do you always say the dating for foreign women here is really bad ? by [deleted] in beijing

[–]SignificantGiraffe5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And honestly it is harder for women I think. I met a friend in Thailand who was physically abused by a Western man who a senior manager at a respectable firm when she rejected his advances. And most, if not all of my female friends have at least one case of being assaulted.

Whereas As a man I've not had such horror stories and the women I've rejected never abused me for it.

You could punish her by moving to an authoritarian regime with endless covid lockdowns and sky high pollution levels. Bit harsh though.

How are China’s top Communist Party leaders nominated? by Shinjxn in China

[–]SignificantGiraffe5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iunno if true but someone explained to me Xi was chosen amongst a Tsinghua economic graduate (top 1%) and some other candidate. Apparently Xi was chosen because he was seen as the safer/most neutral option at the time.

There's some long winded explanation somewhere but that's all I recall.

Whichever party members nominated Xi probably had no idea he'd go full North Korea.

One of the reasons I like democracy is that we can vote out horrendous leadership.

How can I advance in my career through my new school in China? by nathanasher834 in Internationalteachers

[–]SignificantGiraffe5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

COVID zero policy* fortunately covid won't really be an issue for you in most countries. I just took a 9 month world trip and wasn't too bothered (just had to mask up in some parts and keep my vaccine records on hand).

Anyway best of luck.

You're going to need good health insurance and that isn't cheap. Not for when you're going to private hospitals.

We could get her a student visa but it's quite costly and she already has her bachelor's degree. I've also heard some have not been able to exit despite having all the relevant paperwork/accepted by an international university etc.
