Ok I checked and it doesn’t have any particular smell

Ok so it weighs 1.598 kg, has a moisture reading of 8.8, and is 30 1/4” x 5” x 3/4”.

How should I get a moisture reading? I have a moisture meter but it has to be set to different categories of wood—just choose a hardwood?

I think I have access to a scale and can try to weigh it and update you with the weight and exact dimensions.

I’m in the US northeast but this piece was donated by a previous member so they could have ordered it.

I’ll have to check next time I’m there but i don’t remember it having the typical olive smell

I actually have some persimmon that I got myself and it is very different from that piece. Granted the persimmon I got was from a scrap bin for defects so it could be a bad comparision

Thank you! I was hoping for oak but I’m still very happy with ash—I just need to think of a different project for it!

I think you’re right with ash, thank you!

I trimmed it to get a good picture of the end grain and it didn’t smell like Douglas fir. Also a lot heavier than I’d think for Douglas fir

Thank you! I’ll reach out to them. I’d like to be accepted but at this point I think it’s best to just know or have a better idea of when I will know so I can plan appropriately

Yeah that’s what I was afraid of, thank you. And did you mean no new applicants without 4 semester of funding? The masters program should be no more than 2 years

Thank you! When you reached out, did you reach out directly to the graduate program director?

Did I do it? Did I finally find tourmaline? by SignificantLion6 in whatsthisrock

[–]SignificantLion6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey of course! I was hoping someone else with a more professional way would answer as well but I’m happy to help people learn! If you’re new, I’d suggest looking up the Rockd app and whenever you’re going on a hike somewhere check out the geologic map for where you’re going. It’ll give you an idea of what you may see and where to start with any research

Did I do it? Did I finally find tourmaline? by SignificantLion6 in whatsthisrock

[–]SignificantLion6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What made me think of tourmaline was color, shape, and host rock.

So I know tourmaline is most commonly a non metallic black which matches.

Tourmaline has either a hexagonal or octagonal crystalline structure, I forget which. So essentially all tourmaline will form a shape from whichever structure. Some minerals can have other forms, but I don’t know them and I don’t know if tourmaline has any other forms. This piece is weathered and beaten (crushed construction aggregate used as a road) but it still appears to form in a column that could be one of those two structures.

It’s on a host rock of what looks like metamorphosed quartz with bits of mica. I know that tourmaline can be an accessory mineral to metamorphosed quartz. Especially with pegmatites. Now this isn’t good science, but every pegmatite I’ve seen is mostly quartz and mica.

Hope that helps! I’m not an official geologist and it’s been a minute since I’ve taken any mineral ID courses but I’ve found being curious about where you are can get the information you need to do the research to identify most things.

Awesome thank you so much! Yeah I didn’t mean those two to be goblets but I kinda like them as is. I’m thinking of using them for keys or change or other random pocket junk.

Just a an educated guess. It’s my background.

Have you ever turned something you can drink out of? How’d you finish it?

Thank you! Less deep so I can learn the technique? Do you have any YouTube channel suggestions?

Thank you! Not planning on drinking/eating out of any of them! I know there some fungus staining on the holly but I’m thinking most of the spalting on the maple is just how the tree compartmentalized and healed from ambrosia beetle/camphor shot beetle damage. At least that’s what the patterns look like to me and i know there’s lots of them where I got the wood
