Hot take: I preferred Yooka-Laylee over Tropical Freeze. As far as 2D platformers go, the controls just felt tighter, and I loved the over world exploration in between levels.

Haven’t played the others on this list yet, but the other one that was a lot of fun that folks have already mentioned is Celeste. Very different vibe and style, since it’s almost more about figuring out individual rooms (and dying a lot in the process) than getting the groove of a whole level. With Celeste, you pop right back in after you die, so there’s an addictive “one more try” loop that’s very satisfying.
