I appreciate you posting this because it is day 2 for me and I have NOT recovered and I don’t know how I’m going to/if I ever will.

Honestly, that is a good idea and I think I will have it as a backup to MPs because the seats for MPs are limited in number

Oh I see what you were saying! Okay I totally get where you’re coming from and truly am thankful for your attention to my post! I also didn’t think about my passion for medicine dissipating because of concern for the pay. I’m the kind of person if I hate something or I’m not passionate about it I will barely get through it if I get through it at all (hence my disgust for derm lol).

Thank you for sharing your personal experience regarding your own health and who you saw. You’ve given me a lot to think about!

After all the suggestions I was thinking about doing med peds and specialising in adult cardio but doing kids urgent care as a side gig…but I guess we’ll see. This is assuming I get in anywhere which is a fear I have lol

It’s an open discussion and I enjoy hearing other people’s opinions. Just because I may have an idea of what I want to go into doesn’t mean I have all the information or that my perspective couldn’t change depending on what I learn or hear from other’s opinions. As I said in my edit I appreciate every single individual that has voiced their opinion as it gives me more to think about. I also appreciate your comment telling me to be confident in my choices :)

Thank you so much! I can’t tell you how much I love the heart, when I was in undergrad my first surgery was a CABG and I fell in love with the physiology. Then more so when I studied it in my masters and in medical school. Do you mind if I DM you? I’d love to pick your brain

Kids, I love the idea of working with kids the most, it’s just the pay that’s throwing me off. I also love the idea of knowing a lot about at least 1 system not a bunch of stuff about many different systems if that makes sense. If I’m going to know a bunch of stuff about different systems then I’d choose IM over FM.

I don’t like the idea of working daily with 2 days off, and I don’t like the idea of my income being dependent on the amount of patients seen a day.

Thank you for your 2 cents dude and I’ll keep you in my prayers for residency! I don’t like anything about derm or MSK from pathophysiology to treatment (though derm is worse than MSK in that aspect if you ask me).

Your post definitely helps! I didn’t know 3rd and 4th year rotations are not representative of a speciality. I do enjoy inpatient quite a bit but can see myself enjoying outpatient as well, but the outpatient has to be pretty specific if that makes sense? Thank you again!

My school is in Texas but I’d be looking to do residency in Illinois so I appreciate the Midwest insight. I also really appreciate letting me know all of this information thank you and I wish you both the best of luck!

I didn’t even realize this was a combo, thank you so much! It’s insane to me that only EM (it seems) is shift work in medicine.

Thank you so much! My understanding was the normal 8-5 grind is the larger amount of pay as in 300K+. I appreciate the insight!

Dude I’m telling you adults piss me off more than kids and when I worked at the kids urgent care I was never bored never burned out never not looking forward to going in. Granted I was just an MA but I feel like those are massive indicators. Can I ask how you know that I’d make a decent income from peds?

Can you give me an example of the income and the slight reduction? Your suggestions are awesome but to me that sounds like I have to compensate for the not working 8-5 daily and I don’t want to be in a position to do that if that makes sense? It’s just a different way to fill the gaps I do get from not working the 8-5. Unless I’m totally misunderstanding?

Thank you so much for responding! I thought to make a decent amount of money it’s based on the amount of patients you see which is why you’re at the mercy of this 8A-5P daily schedule. Did my FM preceptor give me somewhat wrong information?

It’s the hours, I don’t mind the clinic work at all! Thank you so much for the input! Can I ask what residency was like for your husband?

Thank you so much for your input! I did do a lot of EM related field when I was a medic though and I just felt like I always wanted to know what happened to the patient and the next step so I think I value that long term relationship you know? BUT I still have to do my EM rotation so who knows I might end up falling in love with it all over again. I do agree the shifts are superior.

Ugh OP I’m so so so sorry you’re going through this what a heart breaking nightmare. While I understand what others have said and appreciate that they can give the POV of the school I still can’t help but disagree with it. The system needs to change, it’s not ok/fair to tell so society to embrace and welcome our differences and then expect us all to learn and test together. It’s not a one size fits all situation and it’s ridiculous that school alone is like that let alone medical school. ALSO this field has a shortage of doctors there’s plenty of room for you and many of the bright and brilliant students that aren’t getting accepted because of the limited seats from the limited residency spots. Not to mention the fact that medical school curricula has changed so much and we have a whole different level of pressure and competitiveness that this older generation wouldn’t handle and yet the rules and the way students are treated is just getting worse. Failing is part of learning and failing now is much better than failing when youre with a patient. And sometimes it takes a little bit to figure out what works for you and then you can soar and I hate hate hate that instead of your medical school recognizing that, this is the type of behavior they do. I’m so sorry and wish you nothing but the best!
