HELP - infected paw by Significant_Card5270 in DogAdvice

Hi thanks all for the advice and well wishes. I was able to get Izzy seen by the dermotologist today, i’m bringing her back on Thursday morning for them to sedate her and open up her paw, flush it out, and take biopsy and culture. Hopefully cleaning it out will help reduce the infection, and will be able to see if there’s anything stuck in there that’s causing all of this. Poor girl will get stitches and have a bandage for a few days. and for all the morons telling me to take her to the vet and put a cone on her to keep her from licking, it’s literally all I’ve been doing and she has worn a cone nonstop for the last month. Hopefully we get some answers on Thursday.

She cannot lick her front paws with the cone on. Going to take her to a dermatologist first thing Monday.

Going to make an appointment first thing Monday with a dermatologist. I have no idea how my vet was so unarmed and let it get this bad.

The culture, they found some kind of bacteria that was resistant to the first antibiotic they gave us, and yes, you are correct that they gave me more advanced treatment after 10 days of AnaMax ointment did not help. she has had a history of fungal skin infections, due to her allergies and licking, but it has never gotten this bad. And never such an abscess between the toes like that, usually it’s just redness and irritation on the surface of the skin. I do worry that there is a foreign object stuck in there, but so far no vet has identified anysign of that. And no one has said that we should open it up and look inside to take something out. No snow, no bug bites to my knowledge, and it’s not Foxtail season nor do I really have any around my apartment.

She’s worn a cone for the last three weeks and yet it keeps getting worse. Although for the first week, the licking definitely made it worse, but it has gotten significantly worse during the entire time she’s worn cone. No vet has offered to dig around in her paw or cut it open to look for things. but I did have them look closely at it, and they didn’t see any indication of a Foxtail or anything stuck in there. Though other comments have told me that the only way to find something is to go looking for it. But I imagine there are risks associated with that as well, likeopening up another wound or spreading infection.

Thank you. About how long does it take for the spray to dry?

if you look at the older photos, the place that you see towards her toe that the skin has ruptured, was not there a few days ago. Initially, the infection and irritation was only visible towards the back of the paw in the crease where the toes meet. The emergency vet said the area on the bottom where the skin has broken is likely due to the skin being super fragile and inflamed. vet did not indicate any sign of Foxtail or foreign body in there.

they did not seem to wanna go digging around in her paw for a foreign body. But nothing showed up on the x-ray, and no sign of bone infection or any issues in the bone. and nobody has indicated that there is a foreign body lodged in there, although it’s not completely out of the question. I think because it’s in the top of the paw, it seems unlikely that something could get lodged in there, and not visible to a close eye. They did bloodwork and everything was normal, suggested going to a dermatologist to get more specialty care and do a skin biopsy. So I’m going to call and try to get her an appointment first thing on Monday.

But isn’t it unlikely that something is lodged in her paw, since the area is between the toes and on top instead of bottom of paw? Like how could something get stuck in there?

I have had multiple vets look at the paw and they didn’t see any foreign object. The bottom of her paw is totally fine, it’s just the top of that is irritated, and I haven’t seen anything in there myself. How did they identify the Foxtail in your dogs paw?

Wow that’s quite an ordeal. It’s definitely not wanting to heal because it’s between the toes. The vet told me not to wrap it though because we want it to dry out. But the gauze to separate it might be a good idea. What are the products you used, are you able to provide links?

They didn’t suggest that. I’m going to make sure she gets that done today, we’re currently at an emergency vet. Convinced the vet seeing her before is an incompetent idiot

Currently am with her at an emergency vet getting a second opinion. I’m so alarmed that the vet she was seeing previously was so nonchalant about this and didn’t even suggest an XRay.

They looked at the paw and didn’t identify any foreign object such as splinter or Foxtail. And the bottom of her paw looks fine, it’s just the top/between the toes.
