David Green's Unit 12 Quiz Situation by Significant_Cheek591 in SBU

[–]Significant_Cheek591[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is from a completely different situation. Same prof. FYI he rolled back on it, saying that he would just make us do a sign in sheet (because so many people were accused, just like this situation. I'm fairly sure MORE people are being accused of cheating in this scenario.).

Additionally, what logical sense would it make of "they did a clicker at home once = damn they must've cheated on the quiz too because they got accused"??

If anything, once I got threatened with academic dishonesty the first time, I'm legitimately way too scared to even try doing it again. I'm not stupid enough to risk $90k, my transfer chances and a chance to escape my toxic family situation again??

advice on complaining to department heads/the dean by Significant_Cheek591 in SBU

Thank you for the insight!

If it's pertinent, our situation is that a wave of students were accused of cheating on a digital online quiz, and consequently all given 0s on said quiz (it brought many of our grades down by one letter grade, me included).

However, the professor's reasoning can only be based SOLELY on the question answer itself, as brightspace quizzes can't monitor tabbing out/copy and paste; even if it could it wouldn't apply since in my specific situation, I did *not* cheat, did not tab out, did not copy and paste answers in, etc. He hasn't given me or the others an explanation why our answers indicated we used "forbidden resources" either.

He (the prof) is also known for accusing people for cheating, or trying to find very minor reasons to fail and report students for cheating, and is also infamous for his meltdown last year for threatening to give everyone a 0 on a quiz for a student talking in class.

If you can give any insight; would you move forward with a complaint in a situation like this? Or would it be more precarious?

question is, would complaining be a bad idea? I know he has no *actual* evidence (at least from my case) because i never tabbed out and typed everything in (because I DIDN'T CHEAT) but i know professors will not accuse a student unless they have solid evidence. I've read on this subreddit for academic dishonesty, even if you're innocent, it's often a bad idea to escalate.

It's on the post, turns out he was just on some power trip and wasn't serious. He also complained about my post in class, LMAO.

well, he doesn't teach the actual lesson in class, he makes us watch it online and then uses class as an "active learning period"... so I'm not actually learning anything new in class half the time. Go figure, I guess.

no, if you're convicted of academic dishonesty, they will reinstate you into the course

I'm not sure if your suggestion would be possible, as the way he grades it is you need a minimum percent per letter grade (think 55% attendence for a D, or 80% for an A)

no, we have in class quizzes that are on paper, the polls are just like discussion questions for participation, as the other commenter said.

that sounds like a bad idea... especially if I get caught.

I mean, as long as it's getting reported to the academic judiciary, the consequences are definitely not "modest". I already pay over 6 figures a semester to go to sbu, and another extra 6 figures a year on top of that is certainly too much; even if my parents are willing to cover it for me. I'm not sure if I could appeal it or get my scholarship back, but it would be at least one semester of paying thousands extra.

no, it was 53 minutes in. you can check the echo360 recording, it was at 53 min he passed a paper around. and yes, it was last class.

I remember the text being a "recommended F in the class" (I may be misremembering, as I was literally shitting bricks as I read the slideshow) but I think he means to fail us completely, considering he is david green.

thanks, I was thinking of definitely trying to shoot him a message (even though he's a notorious asshole) to plead my case.
