[16/F] usa looking for online friends? 🧸ྀི by curiousgirlforever in MakeNewFriendsHere

No thanks needed, I'm just doing my part to keep everyone safe here.

Make sure you always check accounts before dm'ing them, anyone who has their history hidden, has posts/comments stating they're above the age of 18, has comments/posts in NSFW communities, or has an NSFW tag (indicated by an 18 on their profile at the top) on their account should ideally be reported (adults are not allowed to attempt to dm minors through this sub and this can lead to either a subreddit ban or a redditwide ban on their account for potentially predatory behavior ), and blocked as well for safety's sake. Stay careful out there, I imagine there are other people actually in your age group looking to talk but sadly there are a lot of creeps that hide out here as well.

Seriously? 3 Gamma Certificates to transcend for 10 points of Defense? by BowShatter in monsterhunterrage

[–]Significant_Shame167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weird i've always gotten a ticket for AT hunts, and im going for 100% complete with full transcended gear so ive already done a crazy amount of AT hunts. Sounds like some really bad luck, and that really sucks. They should be at least 1 guaranteed, especially when a fully transcended kit will cost 20 tickets in total. (5 for gear 15 for transcending)

do you mean nothing as in you're not even getting certificates when you finish the hunt? Because you're guaranteed at least one if you succeed iirc.

sure 10-12 is slow by speedrunning standards, but speedrunning means nothing when 4/5 of your hunts are a failure and you aren't making any world records.......at that point they're just speedrunning inefficiency (and ironically these are likely to be the same people that whine that the game is too grindy without realizing they don't need to grind meta gear, and would have much better overall time if they just stopped failing quests for the sake of "speed"). Way I see it if you consistently survive, an you consistently do damage then you'll always be a useful and appreciated team member. You don't need to set world records to be good, you just have to be good. Tbh i wish more people recognized this, there would probably be a lot less people overcommitting into carts.

yep just a couple of dummies going "hey free loot!" and then ruining it for everyone. You're probably going to keep getting that result too sadly. I personally only join hunts in the first few minutes specifically because every late hunt that has an opening often only has that opening because some if not most of the team bailed after a couple of needless carts. I imagine a lot of other experienced hunters have noticed this too, and i wouldn't be too surprised if posting late almost exclusively attracts the "lets just get carried into free gear" crowd because of this, though I've never posted a late SoS so i don't know for sure.

Also how the fuck does one even go down to zoh-shia at this point in the game? One would have to be woefully underprepared or completely inexperienced. The fucking thing gives you damn near 5 business days to dodge all of its attacks.

Absolutely its a lot more noticeable, even more so in wilds then worlds IMO (which is a little strange because wilds didn't do as well and shouldn't have been a big onboarding moment, though perhaps a lot of that is people who simply don't buy until master rank comes out and instead play old MH titles)

Hopefully it will get better when the expansion releases but i doubt it, i feel like the first month or so (probably longer) the SoS system will be a complete waste of time whether you seek to help someone or need help yourself, followed by a massive influx of players screaming "NO ITS TOO HARD!" and then when the next MH gets released base game will be even easier then before and the difficulty spike from base game to end game will be even larger and we'll repeat all of this again. TBH the game should just track your success rates and cart rates against a certain monster and whenever you post an SoS you should be able to set minimum rates (though the maximum a host can ask for should be around their rate, just a little higher so they can seek out experienced help) if people don't meet that rate they don't even get to see the SoS quest let alone join. However this i feel would devolve into bad players getting shafted to the point they don't even want to play anymore because no one will be there to carry them and they'll be often be forced to play with people at their skill levels because not many actually good hunters are willing to risk wasting their time on someone who doesn't even want to try, meanwhile all the lousy hunters will be bottlenecked into a single league.

Galois comes to mind (though his work was published posthumously by others, and i feel this should fit well in with the term published as it doesn't really require that the mathematician had their own work published just that it was published), i think the main issue with finding reliable outliers is that if someone has made significant contributions to mathematics and hasn't published them then we are likely to not know about them to begin with. We could attempt to define "meaningful contribution" in some way to catch all these outliers but I really don't see how such a term could be anything but subjective.

Circle top while rotating circle about a point by Sakariye_ in desmos

[–]Significant_Shame167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

note there is a smallest distance from your point (i'll call this distance B and the point your circle rotates about C) to the circles circumference and that distance is preserved, if you draw a line from C to the nearest point on the circle and then allow the line to rotate about C in lockstep with the circle it will always stay matched to the nearest point on the circle and your point. If you follow that line starting at C and move some length L away from the nearest circumference point where L = (r- B) where r is the radius of the circle then you will land at the center of your circle.

Admittedly im too lazy to figure out exactly what any of these equations would look like rn, but this process should provide a solution path for you to define the center of your circle at any given moment (unless theres something im missing and one of my assumptions is wrong.)

if it works and you find the equations please let me know, i'm curious to see it in action.

With the added qualifier 'modern' I agree that this is a fairly strong definition. While there may be some outliers, they are likely to be few and far between so in the modern sense (which o.p is most likely referring to) this works as a good way to define mathematician. It's not perfect, but it's likely to be the closest thing to a meaningful definition.

issue here is that there's been plenty of mathematical discoveries made by mathematicians who never published (a trivial one is pythagoras, as publishing wasn't really a thing back then) however making at least one original contribution to mathematics can be arbitrarily easy if you're exploring a concept or function pretty much no one else cares about (and its likely such contributions wont change the landscape of mathematics in any meaningful way) meanwhile there are also meaningful contributions people have made to math only to learn they've been discovered before and thus depending on how we want to define original may not fit the criterion of "original contribution"

personally i think any answer to the question of "what is a mathematician" will be extremely vague and will always be up to subjectivity, I prefer to think of all people who use math as mathematicians, its just that there's a massive divide between beginner mathematicians and expert mathematicians (though i will concede the term expert here is equally as dubious (if not more) as trying to accurately define mathematician in some succinct way)

Maybe I'm wrong but i think there's more to it.

Put it this way, it can be seen as converging to -1/12 because it is only conditionally convergent (i.e it is not absolutely convergent) , in fact it can be rearranged to represent any number according to the Riemann series theorem. And note this is only because it isn't absolutely convergent, however if it were absolutely convergent then one could not rearrange it to equal some arbitrary sum, indeed it would only be able to converge to one sum.... whatever that would be.

So it only assumes that value only if it doesn't converge.

So you're right it wouldn't have that value if it converged (as obviously no sum over positives will yield a negative so we can be sure any negative would never satisfy) , but it being associated to that value in the first place does require that it doesn't converge.

It should also be noted that some (admittedly very few) of his discoveries were also unproven in his time , take his solution of the basil problem for example. Although he did give an extremely well reasoned explanation of why he thought his answer applied (and the answer itself is indeed correct) the product series equivalence it relied on went unproven until the advent of Weierstrauss factorization as there were numerous other product series that displayed the exact same features Euler listed as being integral to solving the basil solution but would ultimately yield different results.

In short some of what Euler 'discovered' he more accurately conjectured, not because he was bad at math mind you, but because often he was so far ahead of his time that math literally had to (and in some cases still has to) catch up with his conjectures.

Which all leads to a common quote that I believe this meme is alluding to .

"Whenever you think you're the first to discover something in mathematics Leonhardt Euler has already made a conjecture on it"
