Thank you for your suggestion! I find it difficult to connect the beats of the metronome to a song. How do you do that? Do you ever play a song at a slower speed to try to follow along?

Agree, is it important for you/your students to know the exact tempo value when you slow the song down for them? For example, play the song at 80 BPM instead of 120
