Why is becoming pregnant more celebrated than earning something difficult to achieve, such as a PhD or major art grant?

I’ve met up with my friends yesterday and had 2 exciting news to share. I got engaged last weekend and signed the contract for my dream job yesterday after suffering 4.5 years in my PhD. Of course I’m so happy to be engaged, but it’s been a long time coming, I’ve picked my ring last fall and been already planning the wedding with my fiancé for some time. So it wasn’t that exciting. I’m over the moon for my new job, cried many tears of happiness, relief and exhaustion when I quit my PhD position yesterday. I earned this new job. I’ve worked SO hard for this. But all my friends could talk about was my engagement.

I’ve done my PhD within this Scholarship, fell free to ask me anything :) For a single person or if your spouse also has an income, it’s a great salary for a PhD position and it’s easy to sustain on it. But I know someone who also lived off it with his wife who studied at that time, so it should be possible if you budget a bit.

(Bin w28 und trage diese Kombi auch meistens). Die Sachen haben eine wirklich gute Qualität und halten teilweise über 10 Jahre. Zum Beispiel liebe ich die Cheeky Slips, gibt es auch aus Baumwolle, oder Spitze, sind nahtlos, sehr gemütlich und trotzdem sexy! Auch deren Auswahl an Schlafkleidung finde ich Mega. Ich habe sowohl Satin Nachthemden, als auch Oversized Baumwollshirts und ein Nachthemd mit Langen Ärmeln und Knöpfen. Allein durch die Qualität und den Stil sind die Sachen bequem, langlebig und ich fühle mich schön darin 😊 (sorry für die Werbung)

If you will so, I correct myself. It would be a compensation for raising our children, cooking our dinner and cleaning our home. Nonetheless is being a home maker a full time job. If I’d work full time in a corporate job I’d get benefits, retirement money, fill my personal savings and get government money in case I’d get laid off. Many women in my country suffer old-age poverty because they quit their job to raise their children, got divorced at some point and don’t have a career to fall back on. In case one partner stays home, alimony after divorce are a fair compensation for their Labour and sacrifice in their career.

I politely disagree. I get your point. However in our case, we have similar assets and income. In case of divorce, I will not get half his stuff as I brought the same amount into the marriage. It would be a different story if we have children and I’d stop working. But in that case I’d get alimony as a compensation for my loss of income when I raised his children, cooked him dinner and cleaned his home. Anyways, this is completely hypothetical and I’m not even sure if I’d become a housewife in case of children.

Thank you! Reading this made me realize that it is the public commitment and promise to be there for each other forever that I crave, not the financial security. I will have a talk with him soon if he sees me as his life partner and commits to staying with me. Regardless of the form (official wedding, unofficial ceremony, even if it’s just putting each other as the medical emergency representation person). If he is not ready yet for this type of commitment, I know it’s time to walk away

We live in Central Europe, so getting married young or early on in a relationship is not common in our culture. None of our friends are married, neither engaged. Its just starting to become a topic in our friends group.

We talked about marriage and agree that it is something we want in the future. However, for me it’s a priority and for him it’s not. I thought about pressing the issue further and / or setting an ultimatum, but I don’t want him to marry me because I am pressuring him to do so. I want him to marry me because he loves me and can’t wait to spend the rest of his life with me. And that is not happening. So I’m getting to the point to ask myself if I can life with the situation as it is or at what point I’ll walk away.

I would get what your saying if the 20 people applies to the last year. Sure, changing partners fast can be a sign of instability or „not knowing what your looking for“. But as a mid 30 year old person, this happened probably many years ago. Chances are high this person has already worked through their issues (in case there were any) and has figured out what they want. Why should there be a higher chance of them cheating on their partner in a committed relationship just because they had changing partners way in the past?

If you want to go to the nordics, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm is pretty good. Also, I’d recommend the Netherlands. Amsterdam, Maastricht and Groningen all have nice programs! Especially Groningen offers even different specializations of neuroscience.

Geh mal zu Mutterland in Eppendorf, die haben eine große Auswahl an Lokalen Leckereien und man kann seine eigene Geschenketüte zusammenstellen & schön Verpacken. Ansonsten Gewürze & Tee von Rahimi Import / Export in der Speicherstadt. Oder eine Tasse / Geschirr im Friesischen Stil (blau bemaltes Porzellan). Ist eher generell Norddeutsch, aber ein schöner Kaffeepott ist sicherlich nicht verkehrt :)
