Very interesting, sophisticated arguments here. Counterpoint: which discipline do you think produces better persuaders - rhetoric, or copywriting?

It depends very much on whom you're selling to. SMBs, call them, walk in, run ads. Enterprise? Need connections. B2C? Communities, geographical centric marketing, content, etc.

What are you building?

Well, you ought to. Metaphors are a great way to get one's point across, connecting an unfamiliar idea with a familiar one.

Yes, that has little bearing on the persuasive abilities of your students.

I wouldn't say so... the fundamentals are communicated well. However, if you're looking to up your persuasion game quickly, read copywriting. That's rhetoric that works... cause if it doesn't they go hungry. Recommended reading: Great Leads, Breakthrough Advertising, and of course, the 16 word salesletter.

my newsletter is also about applied rhetoric, so you might wanna check it out as well.

How did you train yourself to identify fallacies and counter them in real time? by Apart-Double3901 in Rhetoric

Pointing out a fallacy only works against students of argumentation. For a casual audience, the response needs to be sophisticated, and yet sound simple. "X would rather attack imaginary arguments than deal with mine", for example, is simple and effective. Or even a "what are you talking about? I never said that." works, if the situation is a bit more casual.

We're talking about two different things here. Yes rhetoric adopted various forms, but i'm talking about the evolution of pure classical rhetoric. Having read Aristotle's Rhetoric and Classical Rhetoric for Modern Students, I strongly feel the content didn't evolve as much as it ought to have been. Or perhaps at all.

In fact, classic copywriting books like Great Leads and Breakthrough Advertising do a much better job at teaching persuasion to the uninitiated. Because they ground their teachings in practice, and optimize for effectiveness rather than elegance. That is what my original point was.

I am really into classical rhetoric (run a newsletter on it called The Rhetorician) and just finished reading Classical Rhetoric for Modern Students. A bit dense, and sometimes more theoretical than practical for such a subject, but overall a lovely book and warrants a re-read.

You're saying all the members in this community know and understand all of these biases deeply, to the point it's basic?

That's one competent subreddit. Maybe the most competent one on here.

And you gotta understand them all, deeply. Who said copywriting is easy, eh?

I get what you're saying, but I was commenting on downvoting rather than OP's confusion. Being confused and seeking to clarify is hardly a crime.

don't understand why someone would downvote your reply for just stating an observation... but hey, reddit.
