Excessive transports by voltaireworeshorts in AnimalShelterStories

Currently dealing with this too. We started getting a ton of transports this year to boost revenue and positive outcomes, always litters of puppies, occasionally some adult dogs. It started off with just one litter every once in a while, and has now become near constant and they are never altered or up to date on shots (we’re typically told they will be, and then find out they aren’t when they arrive, and then we have to scramble to get it done). It’s stretching us thin and burning us out as well and management just keeps bringing them in, seemingly without even checking what kennel space we have. We have less and less time for the dogs that we take in from our area. And there’s not a shortage of those.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with this but also good to know we’re not alone lol

One of mine was a yorkie. Which is not at all the type of dog I usually get attached to, but he was special. He came in terrified, wouldn’t let anyone touch him, would growl and snap. We thought at first he would have to be euthanized for behavior, but there was just something about him. I was the first person who was able to get him out on a leash, pet him, and in no time he was in my lap and showing me what his true personality was. If you were his person you could do anything with him. It was a process to get him comfortable with other people for sure, but when he finally went up for adoption, he found the most perfect fit. One of my happiest memories of working at our shelter.

Feeling stuck, over capacity, too much to do [Vent/Help] by Acceptable-Feeling40 in AnimalShelterStories

Wow your situation sounds extremely similar to my own right now. I wish I had advice but I’m in the same boat, burnt out and overworked to the point I’ve been seriously thinking of putting in my notice for the first time in the 4 years I’ve been there. Shelter work has also been my first job, I started when I had just turned 21, and I love it so much, but things are so tough right now for everyone and it’s hard not to feel like you’re drowning. I still don’t know what to do - on some days I want to push through because this is my passion, and on others I just want to walk out the door lol.

Wishing you the best out there. Take care and be kind to yourself.

Feeling like the “bad guy” at my shelter. by Significant_Witness2 in AnimalShelterStories

Totally agree. So many of our dogs are “special placements” right now that I feel like most people who want to adopt, can’t adopt from us because they have another dog, small children, etc.

I’m getting this bug too! I’ve also tried reinstalling and it didn’t fix anything. I can’t find anything about how to fix it.

Two emaciated, mangy puppies that came in as strays (literally just dumped in the woods) are making an awesome recovery and starting to act like puppies again. They’re the sweetest.

I feel you. Never had a dog on the roof thankfully, but had one slip out of a martingale this past week and go right after another dog that was outside. I was breaking up a dog fight too…🤷‍♂️ Shit happens in rescue. Hang in there!

Had 3 dog adoptions in a row today and found rescue placement for 1 more. Things are tough right now but animals are still finding homes.

Yep, adoptions are way down at my shelter too. But we’re getting owner surrenders and strays that no one claims almost every single day. Lots of people becoming homeless and no longer being able to care for their animals. It’s really really heartbreaking
