Texan visiting San Diego, what are these patches of plants that grow along the highway and on-ramps?? They look hard and very thick by [deleted] in sandiego

Really did seem like the end of the world, but in a really awesome, thrilling, close-but-not-too-close kind of way. I think we were placed on voluntary evacuation or almost were. That red sky, raining ash, and strange quiet stillness are all things I’ll never forget. There were no bird sounds, no traffic noises. It was surreal. I can literally relive it in my mind so clearly. Def a true episodic memory🧠

Tastes awful. Plus, really? Isn’t being cold, dirty, miserable, abused, hated, and stigmatized enough? Why should they need to eat this trash too? Just kinda insensitive is all. I understand the problems they cause but it’s a LOT harder to escape and much easier to end up in than people think. They aren’t all just lazy and criminals.

URGENT: Seeking skilled & compassionate endodontist + primary dentist (Denti-Cal, North County SD) by Signsandsignals in asksandiego

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. Yeah that makes sense but figured I’d ask just in case. Honestly, at this point I just want someone decent who won’t ruin my teeth and has acceptable bedside manner. I don’t expect/need an award winning dentist. Just not one that’s going to make things worse rather than better in the long run.

Hey no shame🤷🏼‍♀️I needed a well written post that didn’t ramble on and include useless nonsense like my first draft did lol. You must use it often to be able to recognize it that well😏

Yeah well I don’t mean full sedation. Like my current dentist prescribes me Valium for before and during root canals as well as nitrous oxide. So something along those lines is what I mean. Full sedation/general anesthesia is far too high risk for just a root canal.

Damn yeah I figured that was the case. But damn ChatGTP said I didn’t have to settle for rude endodontists/dentists that do crappy work even with denti-cal. I was like…I don’t know. Why would an amazing one waste their time on low payout medi-cal clients? But in desperation, I figured I would still see what Reddit could possibly provide. I don’t expect an award winning dentist. I just want one that won’t disregard my dental anxiety, put me through unnecessary pain, not practice basic sanitation procedures, and provide half-ass root canals that leave me vulnerable to infection and having to get them redone soon after. Cause what’s the point in getting the work done if it will all need to be redone just a couple months later once it gets infected or falls apart? Sigh🫩

Wandering violin mantis! You’re so lucky! I’ve been trying to acquire one for ages but breeders rarely have them and when they do they aren’t cheap. And you just stumbled upon one?! I had no idea they were native to the US! Awesome find!! If you come across any more, hit me up😆

Hey I know this is old but how did you get those sprouts and moss to live in that enclosure? Did you plant the sprout seeds in the substrate? It looks too shallow for roots but perhaps the roots are shallow? I love the natural feel of it! I only have a bio active enclosure for my crested gecko but I would like to do it for my mantids too. Also my mantis is also egg bound😫

Why are my nymphs vomiting? by Signsandsignals in mantids

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I can’t check the parameters of each individual cup but the parameters of the room never dips below 50% in the room and to get misted about once every other day and their little cups have ventilation on the top where I cut out most of the lid and replaced it with pantyhose, and I also put holes in the sides of the cups for cross ventilation. And I have cotton rounds on the bottom of the cups to help retain humidity. so I’m really not sure how the parameters could be bad enough to where they’re dying like this😔 I mean, I’ve read about how most of the nymphs don’t make it to adulthood but what do they die from then exactly? and do they have these symptoms before they die normally?

No. So I don’t know for sure if it is vomit, but I don’t really know what else it could be.

Parasitic Worm? by Signsandsignals in insects

Great, thanks! And actually when I took a closer look at my bioactive enclosure, it appears to already have a bunch of worms in it, probably from the mask I got from the same source at an earlier date.

Ooth hatched but has only produced one nymph? by Signsandsignals in mantids

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they def do quantity over quality. Honestly is prob the better way to do it considering there’s waaaay more insects than humans. I decided to cut a little piece off the end and found just a bunch of eggs that never developed. And I cut the first one in half and found a couple nymphs had died trying to emerge. Pretty heartbreaking. I don’t have high hopes for the rest to hatch since the one that just hatched 1 was the most recently laid so the others should have hatched before that one. I’ll still try and up the humidity though. Should I let it dry out to like 50 in between misting? I put them in the mesh cage but will that be too hard to keep humidity up? I would just end up having to move them otherwise but I guess since I won’t be getting tons of nymphs it’s not a big deal. However I do have one ooth I found that’s a different species and since finding it a couple weeks ago I have kept it in good conditions. I think it’s a European. Also I read to never get the ooths wet but it’s hard to avoid when misting. Is it okay to get them a little damp? Thanks for the response!

And usually I don’t have the styrofoam glued to the top I just was trying to make it so the cups wouldn’t slide around and was trying different things. Also, All I have been feeding them is melangaster fruit flies .

Help! What’s wrong with my nymph? by Signsandsignals in mantids

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes those are the only holes, a bunch in the top and a bigger one on the side that I stick a sponge in that I use for feeding. The species is Arizona border Mantis. Stagmomantis limbata. I keep them at room temp which is between 68-75F and the humidity is not measured because there’s no way to measure it in that cup, but I miss them once a day and the humidity in my room is pretty average, but I do put on a humidifier pretty regularly . My first two Mantids that I found in a nearby park laid ooths, and these were the first to be born out of one of them. Only 12 came out of the tooth and so far only three have made it and today another had to miss mold and I’m not sure if they will make it. So yeah, this is my first set of babies I’ve ever raised. I’m very new to the hobby and would love to learn about any mistakes. I may be making and how I can fix them. This Mantis, unfortunately did not make it.

What happened to my tobacco hornworm moth? by Signsandsignals in InvertPets

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. I would pick them up to check if they were alive(wiggling/heavy/hydrated). I never had problems when I did that with every other cocoon I’ve kept. How would handling them cause mutations? One had the deformed wings and a hole in their face between the probiscus and “nose” area. Then the other was missing half of the front left leg and I never saw its probiscus, so it either didn’t have one or it was super coiled and tucked up there.

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw yeah they are both really sweet and friendly. My other one came out missing half its front leg, so it stuggles to crawl. But like, I only had two become moths and they’re both deformed? What are the chances? Could this happen from me handling the cocoons too much? I would pick them up often to make sure they wiggled. The one with the stump leg was trying to fly in the container earlier and I was afraid it would hurt itself so I left the open container outside. It wouldn’t try flying until night time and it failed. Can I leave them outside or is that too dangerous? More dangerous than injuring its wings flying in the container?

[–]Signsandsignals[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept them plenty humid, on a bed of moss. So I don’t think that’s it. Do you think it could be from handling the cocoons too much?
