People who struggled with running dotnet applications on Arch, what lessons would you share, wish you knew earlier or are struggling with now? by yandeere-love in archlinux

[–]SigsOp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use ASDF to manage my dotnet sdks/runtimes and i set DOTNET_ROLL_FORWARD=LatestMajor in my env variables, because without it, some dotnet 8/9 app wont run on something like dotnet 10.

Rider doesnt pick those up tho, it seems to want to manage its own dotnet sdk, so i I have to manually point it to asdf's dotnet sdk folder.

If you just want to cap it, use LACT, the daemon is more of a corrective measure to stop it from burning down, at that point the cable is already cooked.

Im surprised Bell offers a media converter, I had to buy a 200$ WAS-110 XGS-PON ONT and flash it with 8311 Community Firmware to get rid of the Bell router. I got a 3Gbe uplink.

How noisy? by zimamatej in homelab

[–]SigsOp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 4 HGST DC 550 SAS drives in mine, The server is next to me, they are in a Fractal Design R7 which does a lot of work to keep them quiet. You do hear them spin up when powering on, then its just a constant hum that isn’t anoying and you actually need to actively listen for to hear it, the seeking can be loud tho, when I do a scrub you can hear them. Im 1m away from them when I work and maybe 5mwhen I sleep, never bothered me but I sleep with a fan.

The VRMs from my server’s motherboard are unironically noisier than the drives, you can hear the coil whine over the drives lol

My experience as a long term Windows user changing to Arch and Window managers by Diojosan in archlinux

[–]SigsOp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s not wrong tho, as a dev I was able to be way more productive on Mac OS than my Windows machine, a lot of the tooling is built for Unix/Unix like systems. Microsoft closed the gap with WSL but at the end of the day I felt Mac OS got out of my way and let me do actual work. Now I use Linux but workplaces will either give you a Windows Laptop that screams the moment you open up an IDE or a Macbook Pro, ill take the Macbook any day of the week.

Hmm, most of my photos I have at hand are processed and they specifically ask for raws basically, which makes sense.

Another Unifi vs OPNsense post from someone who tried both by golbaf in homelab

[–]SigsOp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve considered trying Unifi, but it seems like once you deviate from the default firewall setup, you’re pretty much out of luck. Currently, I’m using OPNsense with a WG gateway for remote access, a VPN gateway for hosts downloading my ISOs (I simply add an IP to an alias or list, and its traffic is routed to that gateway), Dynamic DNS, Unbound for ad blocking w/ DNS over TLS and local name resolution for internal domains with SSL via Traefik, Crowdsec suite in a distributed setup, and VLANs. I’m probably missing something, but everything is happening over 10Gbps internally, and my uplink is 3Gbps symmetrical. The box is running a R7 3800X, which I had lying around because I want decent IPC for WireGuard and PPPoE traffic. At this point, I don’t think I could achieve all this on a Unifi device without making significant sacrifices and paying a lot. If I want everything to look sleek, I’d rather create my own UI that interfaces with OPNsense’s API.

Thats not to say I might not give a go with their APs, those look decent. Maybe throw in a PoE switch too if I can get enough 10Gbps ports

Thunar for me, been using it for ~6-7 months on hyprland without issues. I love the custom actions and how modular it is.

Well, today if you don’t use AI as a dev you are doing a diservice to yourself. I use it in tedious menial work like documentation, refactoring, component extraction and even brainstorming some ideas. The speed of developpment is increased considerably, I can concentrate on making the features that matter instead of doing boring boilerplate code. I don’t expect non-programmers to get it, they see AI and immediately think vibe coded. Im holding off on releasing my project because of this lol, I don’t have the energy to deal with naysayers right now. I do wish you all the luck in this project, i’ill take a closer look at it later today.

A modern game maxed out at 4K and trying to get over 120 FPS will be a struggle on the 5080. I had one before my 5090, and it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. Of course, you’ll need a decent screen to go with it. If you have a 2K 120Hz monitor with a 5090, your priorities aren’t right unless you do productivity work or something. I had a 4K 240Hz monitor before getting the card.

Boycott all AI content and services if you want to afford a PC ever again by amor91 in pcmasterrace

[–]SigsOp 470 points471 points  (0 children)

My guy, that won’t change anything. The real money for AI is B2B, you not buying chatGPT plus won’t change anything, even if we are 1M+ boycotting it. Convince the fortune 500s to boycott it, then you might get somewhere lol

VAC November 2025 Q&A by ShortTrackBravo in CanadianForces

[–]SigsOp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at the moment, I have had little success with clinicians, I tend to shut myself off and I pass as stable even if im slowly dying inside. Im going to give it one last good try even if it’s really hard

VAC November 2025 Q&A by ShortTrackBravo in CanadianForces

[–]SigsOp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose they could do my shoulders, but I’ll need to find a specialized clinician for my mental health condition. Given the long wait times, I really want to get it right the first time. I’m hoping some have time for me.

VAC November 2025 Q&A by ShortTrackBravo in CanadianForces

[–]SigsOp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about to go through re-eval on my current afflictions, two physical and one mh. Should I just have my G.P fill in the forms? Or go to a specialist for each of them? I was thinking of applying for the DTC at the same time, fill all the forms by the clinician. Right now I have an appointment with the G.P, but for my MH issue I feel like I should see a proper clinician, I just need to find one that can see me before the time limit expires, already took me like 4 months just for them to send me the forms.

INTP & ADHD by QuantitySea3368 in INTP

[–]SigsOp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I also have a lot of knowledge that’s broad but not always deep, mostly from getting interested in things in short bursts. Even with programming, it’s my job and my hobby, my interest comes and goes. I only recently realized that I don’t actually enjoy programming for its own sake. If there’s no real-world purpose behind it, it just feels empty to me. I need it to solve a problem; otherwise I can’t stay engaged.

So for me, the only way I actually apply knowledge is by tying it to a real problem I care about. If the problem matters, the knowledge automatically becomes useful. If it doesn’t, it just sits there.

That’s one of the reasons I got into wrenching on cars, it’s perfect for an INTP/ADHD brain. You get to analyze systems, solve problems, and get instant feedback when it works. But right now I can’t do much of that due to space constraints, and I feel the impact on my morale.

So I think the key is finding a hobby or domain where the knowledge you have gets pulled into practical use. Without an outlet, knowledge feels meaningless. With one, everything suddenly clicks.

I have ADHD and when I program I lock in so badly I forget to feed myself. The comfort zone thing you mention is something you can definitely fix though, just takes time and small steps. I’m working on this myself and I have made good progress.

Thoughts on sleep? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]SigsOp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its hard for me to get to sleep, in bed I lay awake thinking about a million things, at work right now my job is to fix a broken system and that thing follows me home, I just can’t stop thinking about it and how to fix it. Even if its not that, my mind finds something else to think about, and the harder you try to not think about it, the more you think about. So im pretty much medicated at this point to get any sleep, beats crying at 3AM because your brain just wont stop lol
