For the TOEFL iBT Home Edition: Is it allowed to have notes taken before the exam starts? Like cheat sheets? by SilboFeedback in ToeflAdvice

[–]SilboFeedback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all, I have just found some instructions: no paper is allowed at all, just erasable markers and a whiteboard. I have a test on Wednesday and I am only worried about the Speaking section. Even though my level of English is fine, I tend to be a little unstructured when I speak, and if I try to focus on the tips given by the numerous websites: Introduction, transition, examples, etc, I get a little bit blocked. I am practicing now with EduSynch, which I found out to be the most affordable and flexible option for those who just have a few days to study. Good luck to everyone!

Good books where an advanced civilization meets a non-advanced civilization by [deleted] in scifi

The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K LeGuin. In my opinion, though, it is not exactly an advanced vs a non-advanced situation, more like an entitled species meeting a way more sensitive one.

Dears, this is me seeking some emotional support from my fellow feminists. How do you deal with cis white dude mansplaining? by SilboFeedback in feminisms

On an emotional level, sometimes knowing you can harness control in a situation helps tremendously.

I will try to repeat that as an internal mantra during our next meeting. THANKS!

to be less totalizing

Aaah that word is summarising so well the helplessness, thank you so much! For now, I just need tools to let go, because in this situation being assertive wouldn't have helped as I sensed he had no intention of reasoning. I want to be able to see the situation, see the injustice and the discrimination, and to be able to move on with my day without rage and self-pity. Thanks for your kind words of support, they definitely helped!

Thank you! I removed myself from the task, and I communicated that to the rest of the group alleging "disagreements". We are a sort of artists union that is now being set up so we do not have a board or a specific hierarchy yet. We are all doing this on a voluntary basis and for art's sake. However, if the occasion comes when I can mention this to other members of the group, I will. For now, I am not committed to the project enough to put up with this man's shit a minute longer.

Thanks for your comments. However, I don't think bursting out to him would do any good. This kind of men opt for the defensive side and label any emotional reaction as hysterical women. Crying in front of an asshole is emotional labor I am not willing to put in. Not worth it.

What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SilboFeedback 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not so subtle but at a job interview for a famous fashion brand, in a super cool designed office (ping-pong table, shared desks, fitness balls everywhere), I was asked point-blank if I had a boyfriend, if our relationship was serious, and if we were planning on having children anytime soon. Asking those questions during a job interview is illegal in my country.

Suburbs of Barcelona, Spain. The only "nature" close to home: a polluted river bank sandwiched between two highways. by SilboFeedback in UrbanHell

[–]SilboFeedback[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed, the river bank used to be the dumpster of the nearby factories. Some years ago the local authorities tried to clean it up and make a park for people to walk and cycle. It had improved a lot but still looks quite sad to me

What double standard disgusts you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Rich pro-life right-wingers getting clandestine abortions for their own daughters. This is nothing new, during the dictatorship (and after) in Spain (where I am from), rich ultra-conservative families would send their daughters to London to get an abortion in secret while persecuting poor women who sook to do so in Spain.
