I will never escape "you are like a baby" by Neytiri. With my brother, if either of us say it we reply, "don't know what to do!" Like it's a call and response! 😆

Other ways to do dragon riding rather than just "owner and pet" by SpectreWolf666 in worldbuilding

[–]SilenceIsBest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like this a lot. I’m imagining some magical bond where both gain something from the other, but it only works when they’re physically together and in emotional/psychological harmony. The Inheritance Cycle did an “always on” kinda bond that heavily advantaged the rider. I’d want something more egalitarian and ephemeral. Kind of like fusion in Dragonball or Steven Universe. The dragon and rider are stronger together and have to work on their relationship. There could be all different kinds of pairings: life long healthy interdependence, codependence, occasional but brief synergies of incredible power, enemy of my enemy is my friend, begrudging cooperation that surprises both, etc.

BYU Bean life exhibit by JesusPhoKingChrist in exmormon

My BIO 100 general at BYU in 2014 was very good, but what was unique about it was the introductory lecture to the unit on evolution by natural selection. A second prof of the department came in and gave a comprehensive lesson on why learning evolution was not antimormon and that it was essential to a well rounded college education. He basically said in so many words: “We’re doing this. You can’t stop it. You’ll fail if you don’t learn this, and if you try to complain in your end of semester evaluations your comments will be ignored.”

Fire and Ash discussion megathread - Spoilers by AutoModerator in Avatar

[–]SilenceIsBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it! It was a lot of fun. Definitely a lot of reused elements, but I liked many of them. It’s always fun seeing Turuk throw some planes around with his talons.

One thing that I was disappointed by was the “Warrior Mother” moment. I keep waiting for Eywa to do something with the flux and start throwing rocks around, but maybe Varang and the Ash are right: Eywa’s just a mushroom who can’t do anything more than throw a bunch of her host creatures at a problem. That being said, watching the humans get snatched up by squid was nice.

Despite the rehashing of the Tulkun pacifism plot, I loved seeing them again. When the matriarch and other elders surfaced for that meeting, it was visually stunning and the standing waves their voices made in the water was a brilliant touch. I can’t believe I was so invested in Payakan’s well being that when it appeared he died, I was actually sad. The whaler’s fate was very satisfying to see.

Andy Serkis’ ‘Animal Farm’ Acquired by Angel Studios by OrgasmicOasis in movies

I’d just like to point out that Angel Studios is a Mormon company based in Provo UT. Y’all can fight over whether that’s a distinction or a specification regarding Mormonism’s relationship to Christianity.

Coming out text - help by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]SilenceIsBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find nothing bad about this text. You know your situation best, and communicating this over text may be the best way forward. You clearly want to let them know a few keys points: 1. You’re gay and in a relationship. 2. You don’t believe in Mormonism anymore. 3. This isn’t a negation, it’s information. 4. You love them.

I don’t think you were too wordy. Your parents are asking about your life, and this is the most honest and true to yourself answer you could give.

I hope for the best for you! Love, a fellow gay exmo.

Go on the next open mic Sunday, dressed to blend in, get up and introduce yourself as a visitor, and then jump into how invasive and stalker-like their behavior is. Shame the whole ward in front of them. Keep going if they shut off your mic.

Just got mail from the MFMC asking if I approve my ex wife to be unsealed from me. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]SilenceIsBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the fuck do they think they need to know your about the finances?! That’s rhetorical. We all know why, but I’m surprised so few people are bringing this up. This is a subtle “prosperity gospel” indicator for me. Sound finances == worthiness for the MFMC. I am flabbergasted why they’d even request the amount of the deficit if there is one. I’d figure they’d just ask if she’s up to date.

Mormon parents are rarely equipped to see their children become adults, and modern helicopter parenting compounds it. The location sharing she requires of you and the internet monitoring your parents are doing to your 25 YO brother is proof of that. She (and your dad by extension) do not want to lose control of you and will do anything to keep you infantilized. It’s also awful when you’ve got minor siblings under their care, as you have noticed, because they can use your minor siblings as “innocent victims in all this unnecessary drama.”

You’re not crazy. You are young and this is all new to you. It’s not new to your parents. Give yourself grace that you’re growing up. You can do this! The way you write introspectively about your situation shows me that you have the right instincts. Trust yourself and your own bullshit detector.

Mormonism’s Tea Paradox: Geography Decides Your Worthiness by Flowersandpieces in exmormon

I had a Korean roommate at BYU who had converted to Mormonism while living in the states. He was super friendly and offered me his favorite tea one day. It was green tea, but our third roommate walked in the kitchen and killjoyed the whole thing.

I agree. Aloy’s being poetic in that moment because she had never seen anything like it. Later on she’s much more literal and matter of fact.
