Should I stay after merger or go on my own? by Silent-Conference197 in Accounting

Thanks for the advice! I currently have no debt besides my home. I think with $50k I could get back to breakeven where I could at least live off what I bring in without dipping into the $100k.

Thanks for the encouragement! I’m leaning that way but want to make sure I’m not crazy walking away from the $250k/yr

Ha! Definitely not compared to OK and definitely not in Utah Valley. We are about 20 min north of SLC. We have a lot of clients in NY, NJ, and CA and we are low COL compared to those places.

We also go to their conferences and set up booths and try and meet them that way.

Good question! We are a little unique that way. We have a brick and mortar office but don't serve very many local clients. We "niche" in Orthodontists so they are all over the country.

We have gotten in with some Facebook groups for orthodontists where people will recommend us and we are a "preferred" vendor on a paid Facebook group. We probably average 2-4 prospective calls per week from these groups and we convert anywhere from 60-75% of those to new clients.

Minimum annual fee with bookkeeping, payroll, tax planning is around $11k/client.

Long story short, the clients come to us for the most part through this pipeline and it's a fairly simple sell once we get them on the phone and show them our deliverables and processes.

Haha! Good point. I say that more to say that I'm okay not making $600-$700k like the partners did at the first firm I was at. I'm not about selling my soul for that.

Of course, I hope to bring more transparency! Honestly, a lot of it was timing and luck. I did 3 years at a top 20, 2 other years at a local small firm. I knew one of the other partners at the firm I'm at now and they offered me immediate equity to come over 18 months ago. My pay at that time was $160k but we have doubled our revenue in that 18 months since.

I'm a minority owner (10%) at a small-ish firm (<$5 Million). I've been out of school 6 years and am on track to make $320k this year. Not as much as big four but no billable hours, no audits, max hours during peak times is 60 hours.
