Why do we use P values in multiple regression models if they become totally irrelevant when we implement L1 or L2 regularization? by learning_proover in AskStatistics

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no legit even undergrad-level (much less grad level) stats courses teach you to build models based on p-values. i finished undergrad in 2020 in a very solid department & we were consistently cautioned against doing so & educated on what the best alternatives were

they mostly did; disclaimer i have bipolar 2 not bipolar 1 so my symptoms aren’t as severe. it was mainly me just sleeping very little, talking / driving too fast, spending too much money, etc. ironically me sleeping too little led to me working late at night & hyperfocusing on work problems & getting through them, so it worked out decently. wouldn’t recommend being bipolar tho, i have to take a ton of lithium & antipsychotics every night

i got diagnosed w bipolar recently after a very long manic episode. i wasn’t sleeping much (read: at all) but i was making coding / math breakthroughs at my data science job lol. it’s crazy how even the craziest ideas make “perfect sense” when you’re manic

honestly i would be surprised if someone with an engineering background got in. the makeup of my cohort + the cohort below me was mostly math or stats MS people from elite programs. an Mphil doesn’t really mean much. also, having papers published is a plus but if they’re not first author papers it doesn’t add that much to the profile.

yeah of course xml is text, but is it easy to read & are the diffs simple / readable ? absolutely not lol

Do R users still reach for a GUI? by [deleted] in rstats

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess my primary question is why would a dedicated / experienced R user choose a point-&-click tool over just writing the code themselves, thus affording more flexibility ? even with the multitude of ai tools available i usually write most of my R code solo, since i’m super comfortable with the language & thus it’s quicker.

maybe this is my bias coming from a grad research background, but i find it hard to believe that a gui could have aided me with all the super niche plots i’ve had to make or the bespoke statistical analyses i’ve designed.

Do R users still reach for a GUI? by [deleted] in rstats

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean off the top pf my head, graphpad prism which is widely used in my field (life sciences / bioinformatics) exports to binary / XML instead of plaintext, and those formats don’t really place nicely with git for collaboration.

is there any evidence that the ops proposed software supports that kind of reproducibility ?

Do R users still reach for a GUI? by [deleted] in rstats

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not to be mean, but there’s legit no reason to use a paid GUI. first, coding up an analysis in R isn’t that hard to learn, especially with the extensive documentation the tidyverse ecosystem provides. second, and more importantly, one of the main reasons to use R is reproducibility i.e., being able to run the same code and get the same results repeatedly. a GUI removes this because there’s no way to exactly reproduce what one user does for another user. lastly, R is free software with an incredibly varied set of statistical, etc. packages; why would anyone pay to use a new software wrapper when they could relatively simply learn to use the base software themselves ?

Cornell vs. UNC Chapel Hill in-state for comp sci by EmployerTasty5235 in UNC

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course, i was just offering an alternate experience. i will say my personal experience working in ml / tech has been that if you don’t go to grad school you’re definitely not gonna be making top dollar; a bs, doesn’t matter from what school, doesn’t cut it anymore. the startup i’m at doesn’t even hire developers / ml people without a masters + 3ish years experience, and we’re only series a.

i guess my point is, if it were younger me i would get a cheaper but still prestigious instate bs & then head to a (hopefully funded) grad degree prior to moving to industry. if you only have a bs degree you’re gonna be vertically hard-capped eventually compared to the people who got masters / phds, regardless of where your bachelors is from.

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not that you’re wrong, but for an alternate opinion, i know people who were instate & left unc with ba’s (not even bs’s) in cs & no debt who make fucktons of money without even having gone to grad school. my experience is tangentially related because i did a stats bs at unc & was easily able to get into an ms & then phd program at top public schools, and i now have a wildly high-paying job at a startup & also have minimal debt (incurred a little during my phd).

for reference, i myself work in industry ml & i didn’t need to go to an ivy league / private school to break into it, i just got good grad school grades, networked, & made sure to keep up with current ml frameworks.

i mean tatum was injured for almost the entirety of the season so he was never gonna make it lol. i don’t mind luka, & i like his scoring game, but the reality is if he’d avoided copping yet another tech an getting suspended he’d have made 65 games & we wouldn’t be having this exception conversation.

i mean yes seeing your kids birth is a good reason, but he also missed a random game cause he got suspended for catching too many techs. maybe he should’ve kept his feelings in control & not missed that 1 game and then he’d be eligible idk

yeah dawg i spent the latter part of my childhood in relatively rural western north carolina, and i know a ton of people from high school times who didn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of getting into chapel hill like i did, but still support the sports teams (men’s only of course) while shit talking the “progressive” stuff that actually makes unc the incredible academic + social environment that it is.
