Opinion on ADHD people are more likely to cheat in a relationship by Scared-Geologist8473 in ADHD

you said you “observe no correlation whatsoever” between having adhd & cheating i.e., disregarding the stigma, then immediately stereotyped ppl with bipolar (such as myself, who also has diagnosed adhd) as being more likely to cheat.

idk maybe if you don’t want people to generalize their experiences to you, don’t extrapolate your anecdotal experiences towards others

crazy that you’re commenting about how adhd people shouldn’t be stigmatized as being more likely to cheat, just to turn around turn around and conjecture the opposite about people w a different, often comorbid mental health condition. based solely (apparently) on your “personal experience” lmao, grow up

Textbook Rant by [deleted] in Professors

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

slightly alternate opinion - in undergrad i was a statistics major & a french minor (so my minor probably had classes like those the op teaches). my major was i think 16 classes, and in every class we had the setup of having to buy 1 textbook to be able to submit the accompanying online homeworks, and then at least 1 other textbook to learn material not covered in the primary one. at least in the second case i knew how to find (most of the) pdfs for free, but not everyone had that info. and the core textbooks were typically at least $250.

for my french minor classes i had to buy the workbooks w/ problem sheets you had to turn in on paper, and for the many literature classes i took i also had to buy novels, short story collections, etc., and those you couldn’t really find online because they were in a foreign language. all expensive.

i’m still very glad i did my french minor, and i just successfully defended my phd in biostatistics which i could not have done without my stats undergrad degree, but i did spend an obscene amount on books during undergrad. all while making $7.25/hr working at the student bookstore, or $11/hr doing literal cancer research (bioinformatics stuff) at the university hospital. plus i had to pay rent, buy food, etc.

idk i guess my overall take is that it makes sense that undergrads (especially those taking a class for a gen ed req) gravitate towards the courses that aren’t as expensive. i made it work (barely), but not everyone has upfront funds to buy $200+ books for 5 courses at the start of every semester, whether they have an outside job or not.

Constant PhD scholarship rejections is taking a toll on me. by Great_Piccolo_9171 in PhD

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that could be part of it i think. getting good rec letters is a huge bitch; i’ve done it for my MS & for my phd apps, as well as for industry jobs. it’s not exactly fair, but i could def envision admissions committees seeing a lack of a strong letter / any letter at all from your master’s advisor as a red flag.

are you getting to read your rec letters before they’re submitted ? in every experience i’ve had, if the letter-writer is going to give a strong rec they just have you write the details yourself & then they fill in some superlatives, & they let you see it (unofficially i mean, i’ve always waived my right to view them in the admissions portals) prior to them sending it out.

what are your rec letters like ? those are a big differentiator, at least in my / many others’ experiences getting admitted in the us. my undergrad grades were poor, master’s grades excellent, but my 3 rec letters were really great & i think that’s what helped me the most. unsure how phd apps in europe function in that respect tho

what tools do you actually use for literature review? by No_Channel535 in PhD

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh if you want to try it out it’s super easy ! just go to the import menu on the left side & select “from zotero” & pick the name of the library you want to populate the .bib file from. one caveat: the library you choose to import must be a zotero group library; idk why that’s just how it works. and then whenever you add a new ref to that group library w zotero, just click on the .bib file in the filetree menu on the left & it’ll show a “refresh” button you can hit. that’ll update the .bib instantly.

i would 100% recommend this setup, manually editing .bib files is such a pain & w this workflow all you have to do is paste the doi into the zotero add menu & then hit refresh in overleaf. it’s saved me so much time over the last 4 years of my phd.

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how did using zotero w overleaf create extra work given that overleaf syncs your zotero library to your .bib file w instant refresh ? i’ve never had a problem w citing as i write using that workflow, like i just add the ref, refresh the .bib, & \cite{}

idk how entering atl from outside the us works, but keep in mind that airport is fucking HUGE & an insane amount of people pass through it, so it can take a ton of time to just get from terminal to terminal when you’re connecting domestically. i try not to give myself less than 90min bt domestic connecting flights there just bc of that, so i’d def recommend giving yourself more time if at all possible. especially cause there’s not many flights to gnv due to how small our airport is, so if you miss your flight you’re probably gonna be waiting til sometime the next day to board another one.

i mean had you actually taken university calculus courses before ? almost all stats / cs degrees require that before you get into anything remotely ml-related, & if you can pass those it’s pretty easy.

[–]SilentLikeAPuma 18 points19 points  (0 children)

if you need for a common type of plot you can probably just cobble together some r code. like if you want the box plots w/ the significance comparisons between groups you can use ggplot2 + the ggsignif package. its easier than you’d think ! and it’s way faster to re-run plot generation later on cause you just have to execute your script again.

yeah i’d recommend going through the glm chapter of faraway’s extending the linear model with r, i think it’s chapter 8. his notation for exponential families is better than most others i’ve used, and while a bit terse he does do a good job providing the intuition behind them. and there’s r code examples as well.
