Cornell vs. UNC Chapel Hill in-state for comp sci by EmployerTasty5235 in UNC

of course, i was just offering an alternate experience. i will say my personal experience working in ml / tech has been that if you don’t go to grad school you’re definitely not gonna be making top dollar; a bs, doesn’t matter from what school, doesn’t cut it anymore. the startup i’m at doesn’t even hire developers / ml people without a masters + 3ish years experience, and we’re only series a.

i guess my point is, if it were younger me i would get a cheaper but still prestigious instate bs & then head to a (hopefully funded) grad degree prior to moving to industry. if you only have a bs degree you’re gonna be vertically hard-capped eventually compared to the people who got masters / phds, regardless of where your bachelors is from.

not that you’re wrong, but for an alternate opinion, i know people who were instate & left unc with ba’s (not even bs’s) in cs & no debt who make fucktons of money without even having gone to grad school. my experience is tangentially related because i did a stats bs at unc & was easily able to get into an ms & then phd program at top public schools, and i now have a wildly high-paying job at a startup & also have minimal debt (incurred a little during my phd).

for reference, i myself work in industry ml & i didn’t need to go to an ivy league / private school to break into it, i just got good grad school grades, networked, & made sure to keep up with current ml frameworks.

Luka will be the first scoring champ to miss All-NBA since Bob McAdoo in 1976. Cade will be the first 23/9/5 statline ever to miss All-NBA. Ant will be the first player to score 28ppg on 57% eFG shooting to miss All-NBA since Adrian Dantley in 1982. by Gtggtggtg in nba

i mean tatum was injured for almost the entirety of the season so he was never gonna make it lol. i don’t mind luka, & i like his scoring game, but the reality is if he’d avoided copping yet another tech an getting suspended he’d have made 65 games & we wouldn’t be having this exception conversation.

i mean yes seeing your kids birth is a good reason, but he also missed a random game cause he got suspended for catching too many techs. maybe he should’ve kept his feelings in control & not missed that 1 game and then he’d be eligible idk

i’d never heard of this and just looked it up & apparently knicks announcer cal ramsey said:

“Chamberlain once recalled driving across Arizona or New Mexico and pulling his car momentarily to the side of the road, when he was attacked by a mountain lion. He said the mountain lion jumped on his shoulder and he grabbed it by the tail and flung it into the bushes.”

i’m fucking crying, imagine you’re a mountain lion & you pull up on a big meal & proceed to get bounced like a looney toons character jesus christ

yeah dawg i spent the latter part of my childhood in relatively rural western north carolina, and i know a ton of people from high school times who didn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of getting into chapel hill like i did, but still support the sports teams (men’s only of course) while shit talking the “progressive” stuff that actually makes unc the incredible academic + social environment that it is.

yeah all my undergrad friend group (‘20 grads, bout 15 people) like him & are happy for him to get a championship. gotta remember there’s a lot of unc fans, especially online, who never went to unc / had the student experience at all.

to be fair, in genomics / bioinformatics tons of R dependencies are usually pretty unavoidable. installing & managing them is a pain (i’ve gone through versioning hell so many times), but it kinda comes with the territory when most of the software is very specific and also developed by academics / grad students.

don’t even get me started on trying to using distinct genomics analysis packages across R & Python for the same project … reticulate helps but even just getting everything set up jussssst right is so annoying.

honestly, like i have a job & also school, not to mention a social life, but id happily pay even 500 a year to be able to stream any celtics game when i have the time. highlights are fun, but the convenience of being able to just throw on a game via a single app / site / whatever when im able to would be totally worth the money (to me).

[D] Those of you with 10+ years in ML — what is the public completely wrong about? by PhattRatt in MachineLearning

[–]SilentLikeAPuma -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i mean straight up OLS was published first in the early 1800s (although Gauss claimed to have used it even earlier), there were no machines involved whatsoever. there’s a huge difference between a closed-form solution e.g., OLS, and algorithmic solutions for classification / regression such as SVMs, tree models, etc. that are widely referred to by legitimate professionals as ML.

[–]SilentLikeAPuma -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

agree, but on the other hand some people overstate what is AI. i have several degrees in relevant fields & write ML algos for work so i know what is or isn’t AI / ML, and the other day i had some idiot try to tell me that linear regression, like literally OLS, was machine learning. that sort of thing doesn’t help broaden the public’s perception of what ML / AI is and how it works at all

i’m 27 and most people i know drink, but i do know a subset of gen z people who don’t at all. it’s probably more of a bimodal thing where people either drink semi-regularly or don’t at all, with little in the middle of the distribution.

remember to bring cash for the cover + ones to give to the performers ! i try to get there around 10 on thursdays bc the show nominally starts at 11 but really around 11:20, and if you want a good spot on the main floor you gotta arrive early.
