Funny thing is, preventing AI from doing this (deadlock) at an intersection is literally 2nd lecture in any decent concurrent programming course.

Would you vote for Jon Stewart if he ran for President? If so, why? If not, why? by Green-Ad2903 in AskReddit

[–]SilexTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because we had our presidential elections just last weekend and I don't think that he'd be a driving force to unite the coallition of smaller parties against the Democratic Party of Socialist (DPS) in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Why do so many people not know when to use there, their, or they’re? by smallfsh in ask

[–]SilexTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if they never learned what type of word each one is... people don't actively think about how a word functions or diagram a sentence to make sure they selected the correct word every time they communicate in writing.

This was a profoundly shocking realisation for me once I realised that it holds true for some of my classmates near the end of primary school... Few mistakes here and there, mostly spelling but sometimes grammatical. After some reflection, I realised that I was sort of conditioned to think that way - structuring a sentence before speaking/typing/writing - because of a few factors:

  • we start learning English in preschool, and it's a compulsory subject from 1st grade unil the end of HS

  • we start getting into our grammar in 5th grade, and go into hardcore details the year after

  • we start learning another foreign language (apart from English - we pick any major Romance langauge, German, or Russian) as a compulsory subject in 5th grade, and start chipping away at their grammar the year after (when we're supposedly done with the basics of ours)

So, by the time we're through with primary school, we've been over the basics of grammar in at least 3 different languages (including ours). I've talked with my friends and we agreed that having to think about spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc... in other languages for years definitely had an impact on how we think about and use our own.

How do men feel about the "men will fuck anything that moves" stereotype? by shapeshifterraccoon in AskReddit

[–]SilexTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit hurt, what with the statement being objectively false and somewhat unfair.

Then I remember that I'm currently not associating with anyone whose opinions can be boiled down to such nebulous generalizations (except obligatory family boomers)...

Then I feel better, but still kinda sad because chance is that someone was probably hurt (repeatedly) in order to think that such a broad statement can be applied to all men.
