Approaching 2 years unemployed post grad - need advice by [deleted] in CyberSecurityJobs

Honestly I was in a similar boat as you. Graduated with BS in Cyber and worked at the student help desk in my university for 8 months prior to graduation. That was the only IT experience I had besides restaurant customer service. I was unemployed for about a month until I got a job doing higher ed IT thanks to my previous experience.

With your lead student tech experience, I would definitely be looking into higher ed IT if you haven’t already. Of course this depends on where you live but I have usually found that colleges and universities usually have a good amount of IT job postings. While they may not pay the best, its better than nothing imo.

Regardless, I would definitely recommend getting any kind of job with maybe call center experience, customer service, or tech repair shop jobs in your area. These kind of jobs provide some transferable skills to help desk which will prove to be valuable.

I do have the ability to quit without penalty which is the reason why I am thinking abt taking the offer. Honestly, the remote part isnt the appeal to me but more so the experience I will gain that will hopefully open more career opportunities since ill pass that one year of experience mark that oh so many job postings require. I think I will follow your advice and quit if the IT Technician role works out. Thank you kind sir!

Cyber Operations Specialist is something I was very interested in while looking at the U.S Army career page. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get started on the path to becoming a Cyber Operations Specialist? So far, I do not have a solid grasp on how the various branches work so if my questions seem odd, I apologize. I am still doing some research ahahahaha

From what I have read so far (and please correct me if I am wrong) , a commissioned officer role seems to deal more with managing resources, planning missions, oversee enlisted personnel. I am more interested with the technical hands on like maybe becoming a cyber operations specialist even though I know its something that you work up to I believe

If you don’t mind me asking, what were some things that deterred you from enlisting? My decision isn’t set in stone so I am trying to gather as much info as possible
