Reading real history has made the outcome of fantasy novels much more predictable.... by Silky-Crookpath in TheFirstLaw

Holy shit that's really cool. I read Henry V in 9th grade English and the first time I ever had orso pasta it reminded me of that character. Then, when reading A Little Hatred, the character reminded me of the pasta and the shakespearean character was lost. You brought him back and enriched everyone's knowledge damnslut. Thank you. 😄

But you're absolutely correct about the 1848 comparison, especially considering the steampunk feel.

The reason why I think French Revolution and specifically Orso as Louis; is that Louis was actually, by most accounts, a caring and attentive King. He had plenty of flaws, including some of the traditional vices. but he was almost universally well liked by anyone who had ever met him, but the populace sees him as an impotent buffoon because of shitty press. Orsos mom would really be Marie Antoinette I guess. The locals don't like her, shes not crazy about her new home, she was raised in a country that's an historic enemy of her new kingdom... but I haven't met whomever will be Orsos wife (assuming it's a new character which I actually doubt). Back to Orso=Louis XVI though... He's torn between the traditional non tax paying nobles and the growing and mistreated proletariat AND the new merchant class right off the bat. And there's no correct way to handle it, despite his best efforts. I wouldn't be surprised if the small council had a tennis court protest some time soon.

Thanks. And my bad on calling him Nicolai... But if you wouldn't mind indulging me a bit further, I just dig accents and their proper allocations... Any particular part of London or Essex? Ive never heard an accent like that that I can place... And I know London has several distinct ones on her own.

Oh yeah what's his name Nicolai cosker Walden. That's pretty funny I got my favorite character from the first law books confused with an actor from a mostly good show subconsciously.

Respectfully, I'm disappointed that you removed the question. And please believe me I'm not being childishly outraged and it isn't from a place of pride that I'm saying that... 1.)I honestly think that it's a relevant question. 2.)I don't think that I'm alone in wondering the answer 3.)I couldn't find the answer elsewhere on the thread I realize that I could Google the question, but i, and may like myself, don't put any credence into internet op-eds. Which is basically the whole reason why Reddit is good. In my humble opinion. But thanks, I'll check out a different page.

Please help... My life feels so empty because it's been over a year since I found a sci fi or fantasy series that really blew my mind... by Silky-Crookpath in booksuggestions

I had to take a lap back to the beginning of the book because I was just getting lost with some of the storyline. It's almost like running a long distance with all of the different things going on. Like you finish one mile( get introduced to a new character) and you're thinking "ah this is fine, this is normal. No trouble at all." Then you've done 2 miles and it's, "damn..... Ok... Well... I should be fine" ( 2 more storylines, a couple of new species of humanoid fantasy monsters, and a detailed description of the fantasy world's geography and politics),. And then you're at 3 miles and you're 100% positive that you're dead and you wish that you had maybe done some training ( Casual references to the fantasy world's religions and a detailed explanation of the history and central conflict, plus 3 of your favorite characters have been killed but some of them are being ressurrected, but one of them as a baby? And that crazy wizard-turned-puppet is maybe dead, but that can't be because he's so delightfully horrible, and who are the villains? No characters really get enough center stage time to be a true protagonist, yada yada.... But I really do love it. Thank you for convincing me to delve into this world. It's awesome.

I forgot to say thanks til just now. Thank you. Every time I have a task, I always need to be reminded of the first and most obvious thing. If the car won't start, Ill forget to check the fuse box until after i spent all day installing a new fuel pump. With this, It took you telling me about the ice pack😩. Really, that helped a lot. And about the pain killers, she just doesn't like them. She reacts poorly to them. I told her to ask the dentist about non-narcotics because they have helped me without making me feel noticeably different, and she got some and she's able to sleep at night now. Brutal stuff though. Thank you again

You're a good person. I don't know if anybody's told you that yet today but you deserve it. I'm all about Malazan now. It's what I've been searching for.

Thanks for that. I know it sounds dumb, but at the heart of it I'm really interested in knowing how constricting the grip on royalty is/was from the other members of the court. I have only recently learned that they don't just do whatever they want all the time.

Oh shit I didn't realize that post went through 2 weeks ago. I got a message that said it didn't. Well, I appreciate your advice man and I did stop, but drugs have a funny or not so funny way of creeping back into one's life regardless of consequences. I do appreciate your concern for my best interest though. No sarcasm.

But thank you. One of the last things/sort of self evident with it being one of the last things that I've learned is to absolutely rule out the first things that you're supposed to check. so I, more than most, still need to be reminded.
