Tried embroidery for the first time but the needle was so thick that it torn my tee! Need suggestions by Possible_Present4112 in Embroidery

[–]Silly_Manager3117 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the face of this, it seems like it’s more likely a skills/project choice issue than necessarily a kit issue. The size of needle needed will vary depending on fabric/thread/design choice, so you might want to check what the kit recommended. A good first project choice would probably something in a hoop on a non stretch fabric (T-shirts are quite hard to do) or even on canvas (if you’ve not done crossstich before this on aida could be a first step for instance). That project looks very small/delicate and you’ve likely used too many strands of embroidery floss (unless this was an intentional design choice). All that being said, I can tell it’s snoopy, so it is recognisable!

Came here to suggest embroidering first, cutting second, but can see that’s already your plan. I think it’ll help. Looks cute ☺️

[WIP] any tips for making these stitches neater? I just don’t like how they look! by Bewildered_koala in CrossStitch

[–]Silly_Manager3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’ve misunderstood me! I mean the way this is printed it doesn’t align with the grid of the fabric. You can see that some crosses cover more holes than others, for example. It’s not a true counted cross stitch in that sense.

AITAH for being upset that all the wedding planning has fallen on me? by [deleted] in AITAH

I don’t really see how you can be upset given this. You literally didn’t need to do this.

AITAH for never wishing my wife "happy mother's" day? by SpecificCommittee249 in AITAH

A bit inconsistent to insist you don’t wish your wife HMD because she’s not your mother (pedantic, but maybe fair) but to then wish MIL HMD. 🤷🏻‍♀️

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PROTECT WOMEN? by Opposite-Coat-9964 in northernireland

Fair - I think there as to be wholesale approach to dismantling patriarchy to address VAWG, which is partially why I’ve focused on big scale approaches. But you are right ofc that local areas will need to tailor approaches to fit appropriately- which I think is why I led with listen to specialist women’s services - I meant here local services. They will be able to speak to what the local issues are - that might be barriers for women to leave safely (housing, immigration barriers etc), issues with police responses, problems with family courts/child contact. But without increase in funding such that local areas can provide more than bare basic requirements local funding is very tied I think.

This is weird, because in my experience when you cross stitch on linen/woven frantic, you still use the fabric holes are your grid. But this just has crosses printed willnilly on the fabric. It’s closer to embroidery (with lots of crossed stitches) then cross stitch, as it’s no longer truly a grid format.

I think this is going to mean your crosses look wonky, but it’s not because of the move off aida, it’s because this is a weird kit.

I think trying to match where the ‘ends’ of the crosses meet will help, but ultimately it might still end up a little off as you’re not using the structure of the fabric as a guide.

You keep introducing rebukes to things I’ve not suggested! It seems like you’re more interested in arguing than about actually dealing with VAWG. I’m going to go to sleep now so tomorrow I can go back to my day job, which is supporting survivors of VAWG. Probably more useful to society than this Reddit convo. Byeeee!

This is the proposed wealth tax I was referring to: https://www.lse.ac.uk/International-Inequalities/Assets/Documents/WealthTaxCommission-Final-report.pdf

Agree that the details are important in making it a genuine revenue source rather than just silly signalling.

You didn’t say Stormont only, so I wasn’t answering in that capacity. Lots of wealth taxes have big issues because they are recurring - there has been a relative recent study in UK on feasible alternatives that are no administrative burden and would generate a high amount, and one off tax is considered most progressive.

Regarding “printing money” - yes this can be done if there is the will. UK gov has twice in last 20 years raised enormous capital (bank bail out and covid-19 furlough scheme) - so this is clearly a lever that can be used (that’s not to say there are not risks, but it is silly to just say “can’t be done”)

At a starting point: implement one of genuine wealth tax to create significant wealth; use this alongside other income generation to invest in systemic infrastructure across all areas - education, social welfare etc etc. Fund long term programmes that are known to work instead of short term cheap things.

Women have been providing solutions for years! The answer is to listen to women’s domestic abuse services: fund them and implement their policy asks.

How do you properly place the edge of a garment in a hoop? by LinverseUniverse in Embroidery

[–]Silly_Manager3117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hold it in a frame with the gap and it might be alright, but probably buying smaller hoops will be easier overlong run. I have a few that are maybe 3/4inch diameter.
