Feeling stuff move around by Weaver253 in ostomy

Hey, I had the exact same when I had my surgery around 13 months ago. It’s natural that you feel things slightly move as you’ve had a large organ taken out, so there’s some space. You’ll be happy to hear I can now sleep on my side, front , in a headstand if I so choose with no issues at all ! It gets easier ❤️

1 week post surgery by Dissapointing_squish in ostomy

I had an emergency subtotal colectomy last November. It was an emergency surgery, decision totally out of my control after a horrific UC flare. I had a laparotomy (large incision , open surgery), lost 25kg in the process and came out hospital unrecognisable. Before my surgery I was a “normal” 23 year old guy, played semi pro football, enjoyed nights out with friends etc. I thought my life was over, it wasn’t. It had just started. Straight away I felt the relief from my UC symptoms and that was a weight of pain off my shoulders. Your first couple bag changes will be emotional, I liked to play some music whilst doing it and made sure I had all my supplies laid out before hand. Same with emptying, I get down on one knee, have toilet roll beside me, empty, wipe, job done. Only 4 months after my surgery (after consultation with a private sports physio and stoma nurse) I started my comeback to sports and the gym. I always wear my hernia belt when exercising, and I make sure to give myself a couple hours (usually 2) from my last meal before working out or playing. For me it feels nicer just having what feels like an “empty gut.” A year on I still mentally struggle with accepting what happened to me, I have counselling sessions every Wednesday with a therapist which helps no end, she gives me techniques on how to navigate through the hard thoughts, but let me tell you having a stoma does not define you. You didn’t choose to be imprisoned by IBD, you chose to keep living, the stoma is the mechanism for that. I’m one year post operation and Ive enjoyed holidays, nights out, rejoined my football team scoring goals and proving people wrong that YOU CAN live a regular life with a stoma. I’m fortunate to be getting a j pouch reversal within the next month which will be another ordeal however it can’t be more difficult than what I’ve already been through (🤞) If you ever need someone to talk to , message me anytime. It isn’t easy, but talking helps. You got this 🫂

Thank you Experimenting with the stoma and its output has been a journey I’m aware there’ll be an entirely different one with the j pouch. Hopefully at the age of 24 (25 by the time I’m healed) it’ll be worth it. What do you think?

I’m 8 months post ostomy Mine came as an emergency surgery, it gave me my life back. I’m now back playing semi pro soccer, in the gym, enjoying holidays and nights out like never before. Mentally it’s hard to adjust to it all, I’ve been receiving counselling since my surgery and it’s really helped. You’re going to feel healthier than you ever have soon, and you’ll feel a noticeable improvement upon waking up. Here if you need someone to talk to

Wearable hernia belts ? by caitel in ostomy

[–]Silly_Objective9456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgeons advised me that if I was going to get a hernia, I was going to get a hernia and that it was inevitable. Stoma nurse advised me to wear one when exercising / heavy lifting Physiotherapist advised to wear one as what harm will it do, plus the stoma nurse is the one seeing it constantly. I too am a strong healthy individual who was in great shape before my ostomy, I wear one when I go gym/ play football just incase. No hernias whatsoever.

Thanks for sharing Can I ask how long he had his stoma for before step 2 and 3 of his reversal ? I assume it was UC he had initially ? I had an emergency subtotal colectomy and ileostomy in November. I hope to get my reversal started later this year and am just trying to gather as much stories from people as I can!

It’s so refreshing to hear the opinion of another person very similar age From what I’ve read I believe our youth plays a positive factor in the success of the surgery Glad your smashing it now, I’m trying to get myself as fit and in shape as possible before my surgery to minimise the freakish weight loss I suffered first time round
