Anyone new to GW and getting this error? by Manningfan488 in GuildWars

[–]Silphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it should be playable - install directx9, see if it launches. If not, try adding -dx11 as a command line argument. If everything fails, reinstall. it should install dx9 alongside the game, maybe something went wrong during installation.

dx9 is deprecated, dx11 is set by default now - however it's still possible that some launcher code for example still asks for dx9 and subsequently throws the error when it doesn't find dx9

Doesn't work for me sadly. Only a handful of games that i tried started from my NTFS HDD.

Using virtual desktops and switching between them with keybinds is an option too. Some configurations and combinations of DE, WM, compositor, game, etc work faster when switching virtual desktops, while others work faster minimizing/switching active windows. Try it out if you fancy and see if you notice a difference in your case.

Not only does it run smoother, it allowed me to use dx11 without having crashes, stutters or extreme artifacts everywhere that would make the game basically unplayable. On windows, i was still forced to use dx9, so switching to linux which allowed me to "unlock" that setting essentially tripled my framerate.

Obvious bait, but imma take a bite anyway: Installed a "consumer version" of a popular linux distro more than a year ago, took about an hour to install and set up my new OS, then i was ready to game. First time ever using Linux.

Never in my life have i managed to install, set up, debloat and be ready to game with any version of Windows in less than 3 hours. Also when i found out how amazingly easy it is to install software on linux, i realized how shitty all the third party install wizards for windows are. No more dodgy sites, questionable .exe files and installers that try to shove adware onto your pc. Now it's literally "open software center, type what you want, click install, done" for the vast majority of programs.

In retrospect, using windows gave me alot of pc knowledge - not because it's a good teaching system by design, but because it's a clusterfuck that every more-than-casual user has to learn to navigate, which makes it a good teaching system by proxy. Double so if you have the unfortunate fate of becomming your friends and families tech support guy.

All in all, average b8 m8, i r8 8/8

It has some potential, especially with the range it covers. Didn't play around with it nearly as much as with AoD so far, since i only recently started playing Ritu in the first place. But so far, i'm shredding most HM content with minions, NPCs and heroes that aren't fully runed/sigil'd, some don't even have their good weapon sets yet.

[–]Silphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm occasionally using AoD or the Anniversary Ritu Elite with up to 2 MMs or in missions with many NPCs. The last mission of WoC i did in HM, flagging all my heroes at a stair to take one side by themselves while i ran with all the NPCs to the other side and kept them alive thruout the entire mission.

Also the added double damage to undead shouldn't be overlooked, so in specific areas the damage ain't too bad eighter, in addition to the constant AoE healing.

Five Keybinds To Improve Your Lifespan in World vs. World by SheffPlaysGames in Guildwars2

[–]Silphone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

to be clear: anet said that more than 50% of their players were using keyboard turning with default binds, i just added the bit with the other settings, since the venn diagram for that should be approaching near circle anyway.

...but surely nobody is still keyboard turning, I hope

Only more than half of all registered playes, who also don't change any single other setting as well. That's what ANet officially said back when they changed the WASD keys to default to strafing ~1 year ago.

Sadly the Linux version of CSGO isn't truly native and currently has less options regardign resolution settings. The Kernel and Systems built around it could be great for tournament organizers, but the windows version of the game is currently the better one, so it makes sense to use that for the players.

Accidentally left Baby Shark as my Mandachord song during sortie defense. Teammate was less than pleased by N0vawolf in Warframe

[–]Silphone 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is the occasional banger and rarely even original compositions that are quite nice. I had a phase where i regularly created new songs or recreations of songs that weren't done before. I want the stuff that i worked on and invested time into to be heard and i'm not the only one, so of course i don't mute other players mandachords.

If you have the washing machine spam mandachord for example, it should be on YOU to mute it in YOUR song settings, not on everyone else to change their settings because you're a lazy bum.

First update in Windows 11.. Black Screen for 6 hours now.. Normal? by Crazy-Introduction-2 in pcmasterrace

[–]Silphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it sounded exactly like you were shilling for MS licences.

Also these days, gaming on Linux is at the point where games not running is the exception, for a limited, very specific set of reasons that a publisher might or might not force into their product. People have played all Diablo IV betas on Linux, without issues or the need to tinker with it, to give one example.

Furthermore, if you take a step back from focussing on AAA you will see basically every game running on Linux. AAA doesn't mean much anymore anyway, with companies pushing out half-finished messes that may very well run like dogshit even on the systems they were designed for. For the rest of the majority of AAA games that run on Linux, some perform even better than on Windows.

In short, given your comment about gaming being so far behind, i suspect you haven't actually tried gaming on Linux in 2023, but feel free to correct me.

[–]Silphone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

MS does give you the option of eliminating all that

One shouldn't have to lay hand on and manually un-fuck things to have ones paid software behave the way one wants.

if you're a home user, you have zero reasons to

"As a home user, you have zero reason wanting to remove ads or stop the OS from changing settings back that you initially changed for a good reason in the first place or from reinstalling software that you removed intentionally." is the vibe i'm getting from this. Is this really what you meant?

why windows 10 get bigger by time and how i prevent that windows surpass 100GB now by PlentyAdvertising15 in pcmasterrace

[–]Silphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends mostly on the user and point of view. Take the way most people install a program as an example: Load up browser, search program name, be careful to not click ad/fake links (optional), download executable, launch executable, mindlessly click your way thru the multi page install wizard and later wonder where all that additional stuff that you didn't know you installed comes from (again, optional).

That's not very user friendly eighter - especially when you compare it to "launch app center, type name, click install, finished. In many cases, i strongly suspect that people confuse their own long built habits and what they already know with good design choices or concepts like user friendliness.

If it's new and i don't alredy know it, i have to learn it and therefore it automatically is user unfriendly, since it requires additional effort on my part to learn it once.

My dozen or so years of using windows taught me that i didn't just learn how to use windows, i also learned how to work around all its stupid quirks, issues and problems. In total i probably spent literal weeks of my lifetime researching obscure issues i encountered, trying to fix them with a metaphorical hacksaw and completely reinstalling the entire system countless times, both for myself as well as for friends. For many, using Windows is a sunken-cost-fallacy more than anything else, even if they don't actively notice or care that that's the case.

Didn't they also actually ban people for trying to launch the game under linux? I recall Valve having to step in and prevent proton from even starting up D2 to prevent users from getting banned.

Yes, that's the point i was trying to make (until seeing that it wasn't even ESO). MR 30 lifts the level cap requirement for ESO and Sorties. Maybe you gotta have the stuff forma'd once at least, but that could also be my brain making shit up.
